LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's
basketball team pulled its second major upset is as many nights,
defeating CCAA leader Cal State Dominguez Hills by a 83-76 score
Saturday night in RIMAC Arena.
CSUDH was the No. 4 team in the West Region
entering the week, while Cal Poly Pomona, whom UCSD beat last
night, was the No. 7 team in the region and the No. 21 team in the
country. With the win UCSD improves to 16-9 overall and 12-6 in
the CCAA while Cal State Dominguez Hills falls to 16-8 overall and
14-4 in league action.
Leora Juster led the Tritons offense with 23
points on the night, the same total she had last night in the win
over Cal Poly Pomona. Margaret Johnson chipped in with 14 points,
nine rebounds and four assists while Hillary Hansen added 13
points and nine boards.
Tameka Blue scored 17 points to pace the Toros.
Octavia Askew added 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting while Michelle
Kribell scored nine above her season average, pouring in 13 points
on 5-for-9 shooting.
UCSD shot only 44.8% from the floor despite
making nearly half of its three-point attempts (10-for-21). CSUDH
made only 42.6% of its shots, including 6-of-17 from behind the
arc.
The Tritons out-rebounded the Toros by a 42-33
margin, but it was CSUDH who forced 17 UCSD turnovers while
committing only 10 of its own.
Cal State Dominguez Hills plays one more road
game in the regular season -- Wednesday night at Cal Poly Pomona.
They finish the season at home next Saturday night against Cal
State Monterey Bay. UC San Diego returns to the road for its final
regular season games next weekend, taking on San Francisco State
on Friday night and Sonoma State Saturday evening. Both teams will
then await word of its postseason fate as the NCAA Division II
West Regional bracket will be announced the following day.
