Complete Box Score

CARSON, Calif.--(February 27, 2005)--Sonoma State and host Cal State Dominguez Hills combined for 41 hits in a record-setting marathon, that saw the Seawolves win an epic battle in 16-innings over the Toros, 11-10, in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Sunday afternoon at Toro Field.

The 16-inning affair lasted five hours and forty-eight minutes, marking the longest game in CSUDH history. You have to go back to May 5, 1992 when Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona went 15 innings lasting five hours and four minutes.

The Toros and Seawolves went toe-to-toe in this one that was reminiscent of an Ali vs. Frazier heavyweight battle of the '70's. But it was Sonoma State that came out on top on a Carlos Pasillas solo homerun in the top of the 16th. Cal State Dominguez Hills fought back in the bottom of the frame, however, Ricky Eda (Palos Verdes/Peninsula HS) was thrown out at the plate when trying to score from first base on a double by Isidro Perez (Southgate/Southgate HS).

CSUDH (6-7, 2-5 CCAA) was up, 7-5, going into the ninth, but Sonoma tied the game with two runs on four hits, all with two outs. Aaron O'Dell drove in the tying run with a double to leftfield with runners on second and third to send it into extra-innings.

Sonoma scored twice in the top of the tenth frame when Zack Pace singled up the middle with the bases loaded to make it 9-7. The Toros answered with two of their own in the bottom of the tenth on an RBI groundout by Fred Medina (Santa Ana/Century HS) and a single down the rightfield line by Jose Montes (Pacoima/San Fernando HS), scoring Perez who had reached earlier on a fielder's choice, to make it 9-9.

In the 15th inning, Mike Bidwell gave the visitor's a 10-9 lead hitting a two-out homer to leftfield. But once again, Cal State Dominguez Hills had the answer with a run in the bottom of the inning. This time it was Pedro Gutierrez (Carson/Carson HS) knocking an RBI double to leftfield to score Claudio Gutierrez (Sylmar/San Fernando HS) who reached earlier on a walk.

However, Cal State Dominguez Hills didn't have an answer in the 16th after Pasillas gave the Seawolves a 11-10 edge with his third homerun of the year.

In all, the team's combined to leave 36 runners on base, pound out 11 extra-base hits and use 11 different pitcher's in the game that struck out 21 batter's on the day.

Once again, Tony Alcantar led SSU at the plate hitting his fifth homerun of the series and going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Three other Seawolf players had three hits on the day.

Craig DeMartini (1-0) earned the win going 3.0 innings allowing one run on three hits. Matt Means came on with one out in the 16th and retired both batter's he faced to notch his first save of the year.

Cal State Dominguez Hills was led offensively by Isidro Perez going 4-for-8 with two RBI. Four other's had three hits on the afternoon. Lakewood HS product James Dodson (0-2), despite pitching well, suffered the loss for the Toros. Dodson went the final 5.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits.

The Toros are back in action on Tuesday hosting Azusa Pacific University at 2 PM.
