POMONA Cal Poly Pomona, bidding for
their first California Collegiate Athletic Association title since
1981, jumped out to a 40-24 halftime lead and defeated Cal State
Dominguez Hills, 73-50, Wednesday night in Kellogg Gym.
Cal Poly Pomona (20-6, 15-4) pulled to within
one-half game of first-place Cal State San Bernardino and will
close out the regular season on Friday with a home game against
Cal State Monterey Bay. Cal State San Bernardino will finish its
regular season with road games at Sonoma State and San Francisco
State.
The Broncos reached the 20-win plateau for the
third straight year, which is a first for the program.
David Sybesma and Jonathan Boyd had 16 points
each to lead the Broncos, while Jeff Bonds had 10 points and six
rebounds.
Eric Crookshank led three Toros in double
figures with 12 points. Phillip Givens and Quenton Harvey had 11
points each for Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-19, 6-13).
Cal Poly Pomona grabbed the lead early in the
first half on a Bonds 3-pointer that put the Broncos ahead, 7-5.
The Broncos led by just two points, 19-17, before closing the
first half on a 21-7 run that opened up a 40-24 halftime lead.
The Toros never got closer than 13 points in
the second half and the Broncos built leads as large as 27 points.
Cal Poly Pomona enjoyed a slim 37-33 rebounding
advantage and shot 53.7 percent from the field. The Toros,
meanwhile, shot just 34.4 percent.
Cal State Dominguez Hills closes out its
regular season at home on Saturday against Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Broncos will finish the regular season on Friday with a home
game against Cal State Monterey Bay. Cal Poly Pomona will then
await the NCAA Division II playoff pairings, which will be
announced on Sunday night.
