CARSON, Calif-(March 5, 2005)-Cal State
Dominguez Hills closed out the 2004-05 season with a tough 66-64
loss against visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night in
California Collegiate Athletic Association action in the Torodome.
The Toros complete the campaign in a tailspin
dropping its final five games of the season and finish 7-20
overall and 6-14 in league play. CS Monterey Bay meanwhile
completes its first season in the CCAA with a 13-14 overall record
and a 10-10 mark in conference action.
Cal State Dominguez Hills got a team-high 14
points from Quenton Harvey and a double-double by senior guard Les
Norman with 13 points and a game-high 12 boards. Senior forward
Alexous Scruggs also chipped in with 12 points in his final game
in a Toro uniform.
Devoughn Lamont led the Otters with 14 points
off the bench. Jared Jungwirth had 12 points while Demar Walton
and Azzan Walker finished with 10 points apiece.
The game was nip and tuck the entire way with
CSUMB taking a slim 35-33 lead into halftime. The teams came out
in the second period and exchanged the lead three times in the
first five minutes.
CSUDH went up by six, 58-52, after a Quishawn
Harrell free throw with 8:45 remaining. But CSUMB went on a 6-0
run to tie it, 58-58, after a layup by Lamont with 7:40 left.
After two more lead changes, the Otters and
Toros went on a scoring drought making only one basket combined
over the next six minutes. Monterey Bay had a four point lead,
66-62, with just :57 seconds left before Harvey trimmed it to
66-64 with a pair of free throws with :43 seconds remaining.
In their next possession, Lamont turned the
ball over for the Otters giving Cal State Dominguez Hills a last
chance to tie or win the game with a 3-pointer. But the Toros
missed four shots while getting three offensive rebounds in the
final nineteen seconds to send Monterey Bay home with the win.
The loss ends the season for Cal State
Dominguez Hills and saw four seniors play in their final game.
Harvey, Norman, Scruggs and forward Eric Crookshank donned the
Cardinal & Gold for the last time tonight.
