SHALL WE DANCE?: The Toros are making
their first appearance back to the NCAA Championship Tournament
after a nine-year layoff, and its third ever trip to the dance.
Cal State Dominguez Hills will be looking for its first NCAA
postseason win in the 25-year history of the program. CSUDH last
went to the dance in the 1995-96 season, losing in the first-round
to Montana State-Billings, 67-57, at host UC Davis. The Toros only
other appearance in the postseason took place in the 1994-95
season, falling once again in the first round to UC Davis, 52-42,
at regional host Portland State.
LEADING THE TORO CHARGE: Cal State
Dominguez Hills is led by junior guard Tameka Blue who is
averaging 14.1 points a game. Blue's 5.3 assists per game rank her
second in the CCAA. She has registered a team-best 65 steals on
the year and has played in a team-high 30.5 minutes per game.
Freshman forward Alana Bailey has made a big impact in her first
collegiate season. Bailey is second in scoring averaging 12.1
points per game, and leads the Toros on the boards grabbing 6.1
rebounds per game. Bailey leads the entire CCAA in field goal
percentage making .578 of her shots (122-211). Senior guard
Octavia Askew is the final player averaging in double figures.
Askew averages 10.7 points per game and is second on the team in
rebounding with 4.6 rebounds a game.
BLUE CLOSING IN ON 1,000: Tameka Blue
is closing in on 1,000 career points, and in her next game should
become only the eighth player to score over a thousand points in
her career. The junior guard is sitting on 992 points. She
currently ranks 8th in the Toro all-time record books in scoring.
Former CSUDH great Faye Hagan leads the list with 1,466 points
from 1993-96.
TOROS SNAP THREE-GAME LOSING STREAK WITH
WIN OVER OTTERS: Tameka Blue poured in a season-high 27 points
to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills to an 84-67 win over Cal State
Monterey Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association action
last Saturday night in the Torodome. CSUDH took a 46-31 halftime
lead into the break thanks in part to 14 first half points by
Blue. The Toros were hot from beyond the arc in the first twenty
minutes hitting 50% of their attempts (7-14). Cal State Dominguez
Hills came out in the second half and built a 20-point lead in the
first five minutes, 61-41, with 15:18 remaining. The Toros led by
as many as 28 points in a game that was never really in jeopardy.
After Blue's 27 points, the Toros were led by three other's in
double figures offensively. Senior guard Octavia Askew poured in
16 points and senior forward Crystal Maciel came off the bench to
knock in 14 on 5-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-7 from behind the
3-point line. Freshman Jessica Liang hit for 12 points with four
three-point baskets. Senior center Naupaka Uperesa led the Toros
on the glass with seven rebounds. Five CSUDH seniors were playing
in their final regular season home game at the Torodome. Askew,
Maciel, Uperesa, Lindsay Peloza and Karen Shirley put on the
Cardinal & Gold for the last time in the Torodome.
CCAA LEADERS: Several Toro players rank
among the leaders in CCAA statistical categories. Tameka Blue
ranks second in assists (5.3 apg), 9th in scoring (14.1 ppg), 7th
in FT% (.791), 4th in steals (2.5 spg), 11th in 3-pt. field goals
made (36) and third in assist/turnover ratio. Alana Bailey leads
the CCAA in FG% (.578), 14th in scoring (12.1 ppg) and rebounding
(6.1 rpg), and 10th in blocks (16). Octavia Askew is 12th in FG%
(.443), 7th in steals (2.3 spg) and 18th in free throw pct.
(.692). Freshman post Michelle Kribell ranks 15th in blocked shots
with 12.

as well on the road as they have at home. CSUDH is .500 (6-6) away
from the friendly confines of the Torodome. Three of those losses
came in the early part of the season, and the other three took
place in the final roadtrip of the year at CS San Bernardino, UC
San Diego and Cal Poly Pomona. CSUDH is 11-3 at home overall and
9-1 at home in CCAA games.
