Carson, CA Cal State Dominguez Hills
senior Ricky Eda (Palos Verdes, CA/LA Harbor HC) hammered his
third homerun of the year as part of his two-hit afternoon, but
visiting Cal State L.A. tallied four homeruns on the day, scoring
the games first seven runs en route to a 9-4 victory this
afternoon on Toro Field. With the loss, CSUDH falls to 6-12, 2-9,
while CSULA improves to 7-6, 5-6 CCAA.
After retiring the Golden Eagles in order to
begin the game, CSULAs Scott Moore tagged Toro starter Chris
Borchers (Torrance, CA/LA Harbor JC) one inning later with an
opposite field shot over the left field wall for a quick 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles would build on their lead, scoring three runs in
both the 4th and 5th innings to take a comfortable 7-0 advantage.
Eda would cut into the CSUDH deficit in the
bottom of the 5th frame, following a Houston Hernandez (La Mirada,
CA/St. Paul HS) double and Claudio Gutierrez (Sylmar, CA/College
of the Canyons) walk with a smash over the center field fence, his
third dinger of the season.
Cal State L.A. would answer back three frames
later, scoring single runs in both the 8th and 9th innings to take
a 9-3 lead. The Toros, however, courtesy of an Ian Corso (Thousand
Oaks, CA/CS Stanislaus) double, an Armando Gomez (Playa del Rey,
CA/LA Harbor JC) single and a Hernandez fielders choice
would produce CSUDHs final run of the contest as CSULA would
take game one of the three-game set, 9-4.
The Toros Borchers would last 7.1
innings, fanning 10 Golden Eagles but allowing 10 hits and seven
earned runs in the loss (1-4). Eda, Corso, Gomez and Isidro Perez
(South Gate, CA/LA Harbor JC) each would tally two hits on the
afternoon, while reliever Gustavo Hernandez (Lynwood, CA/Lynwood
HS) would throw the final 1.2 innings.
Joey Molinas three hits paced four Golden
Eagles who would enjoy multiple-hit games as eight CSULA players
would drive in a RBI, headed by Jacob Ferris two-RBI outing.
Mateo Marquez, Matt Beard, Ferris and Moore each went deep for
CSULA, giving senior left-hander Brandon Higelin the run support
he would need in throwing all nine innings, allowing 11 hits and
four runs to pick up the win (3-2).
The two teams conclude their three-game set
with a doubleheader tomorrow morning. First pitch of game one is
scheduled for 11 a.m. on Toro Field.
