CARSON, Calif.--(March 26, 2005)--It was a tale of two games that saw a pitcher's duel in the first and an offensive outburst in the second, with visiting Cal Poly Pomona getting the best on both ends sweeping Cal State Dominguez Hills in California Collegiate Athletic Association play Saturday afternoon at Toro Field by scores of 2-1 and 10-8.

In the early game, Pomona starter John Cross (5-1) and CSUDH starter Chris Borchers (Torrance/So. Torrance HS) were locked up in a pitcher's dueled for six-plus innings. Cross struck out five of the first six batters he faced and retired the first 11 batters of the game and nursed a 2-0 lead going into the seventh.

Borcher's matched the effort with a workman-like performance through 6.1 innings allowing only four hits and giving up a run on a wild pitch in the third. Fred Medina (0-1) came on in relief in the seventh and surrendered the game-winning run on a two-out single by Andy Gonzales.

CSUDH plated a run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by David Leos (Los Angeles/Venice HS), but that was all they would manage from there as Bronco reliever's John Lee and Matt Lusk would shut down the Toros over the final three innings for the 2-1 win.

In the nightcap, Cal State Dominguez Hills gave up a 7-4 late lead allowing six runs in the sixth inning to give Pomona a 10-7 lead.

The Broncos took a quick 2-0 lead in the first after a two-out 2-run double by Kevin Falls. The Toros answered right back in the bottom of the frame with two runs of their own on an RBI groundout by Isidro Perez followed by a run scoring single by frosh first baseman Matt Hopps (Torrance/So. Torrance HS).

Cal Poly Pomona (17-12, 15-7 CCAA) came right back in the top of the second with two more runs to retake the lead, 4-2, after consecutive RBI singles by Matt Stevens and Jake Mendrin with two outs.

The Toros once again tied it in the third on back-to-back solo home runs from Perez and Hopps, both deep blasts over the right-center field fence, to make it 4-4.

Cal State Dominguez Hills (11-17, 6-14 CCAA) took a 7-4 lead in the fifth after RBI singles by Hopps, Jose Montes (Pacoima/San Fernando HS) and Houston Hernandez (La Mirada/St. Paul HS).

Then in the sixth inning, Pomona put up a six spot on five hits and an error to forge a 10-7 lead. Toro starter Gary Scott got in trouble after allowing a run on Chris Jaworski's solo home run with one out. The freshman right-hander got another out but allowed a hit and a walk before giving way to lefty reliever Ryan Owen (3-3) who failed to record an out. Owen gave up three of his own runs on two hits to suffer the loss.

CSUDH got a run back in the sixth on an RBI double by Montes, but could get no more for the final score of 10-8. Hopps led the Toros going 3 for 4 with three RBI. Perez and Montes also knocked in two runs apiece.

Kevin Falls led the Broncos with four RBI in the game. Kyle Todd registered the win in relief going the final 2.2 innings allowing one run on three hits.

Cal State Dominguez Hills is in non-conference action on Tuesday traveling to Cal Baptist University. First pitch is slated for 2 PM.
