RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Tuesday, March 29, 2005) -
The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team held off a late Cal
Baptist charge to hold on and beat the Lancers in non-conference
action Tuesday afternoon in Riverside, 6-5.
CBU (9-16-1), which used five pitchers in the
loss, dropped its first contest to the Toros (12-17) in the last
four matchups between the teams. The Lancer bullpen went seven
innings and only allowed a run, but CSDH held on to an early lead
to pick up the win.
Senior RF Ricky Eda had two hits, reached base
four times, and scored three runs on a double and a home run to
lead the Toros. Junior CF Isidro Perez and senior LF Jose Montes
each had two hits and knocked in a run for CSDH.
CS Dominguez Hills picked up a first-inning run
when Eda doubled and scored on a groundout. Montes then had an RBI
double in the second, and Eda scored on a third-inning single by
senior DH Ian Corso, making the score 3-0 after three innings.
The Lancers brought the game to within a run at
3-2 with a two-run home run by Seuss in the fourth inning. Eda
then led off the fifth with his team-leading eighth homer of the
year. But the Lancers drew within one, 4-3, with an unearned run
in the bottom of the frame.
The Toros scored a pair of runs in the eighth
inning, after senior Fred Medina had a pinch-hit RBI single and
scored on a double by senior 3B David Leos, making the score 6-3
in the eighth.
Cal Baptist kept coming back picking up a
couple of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but that would
be all the runs the hosts could muster eventually falling, 6-5.
Sophomore RHP Gus Hernandez (1-0) earned the
win for the Toros after throwing 6 2/3 innings where he allowed
three runs (two earned) on five hits while walking none and
recording two strikeouts. Hernandez retired the first eight
batters he faced in the game. Junior RHP Pedro Gutierrez picked up
the save after escaping the eighth and tossing a scoreless ninth
for the Toros.
CSUDH is back in non-conference action with a
five-game home series against Hawaii Pacific beginning with a
doubleheader on Friday at noon.
