UCSD Baseball Powers to 20-11 Win over CSUDH

LA JOLLA, Calif - The 17th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team pounded out 23 hits en route to a 20-11 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday afternoon in Triton Baseball Field.

The Tritons improve to 20-10, 15-8 CCAA while the Toros drop to 16-19, 6-15 CCAA.

UCSD’s David Morehead, last week’s CCAA Player of the Week, led all players with four hits, including a two-run homerun. Morehead joined teammates Ricky Pinocchio, Joel Clark and Brian Robinson with three RBI apiece. Alex Gascon led UCSD with four RBI.

Ricky Pinocchio led off the Triton first with a single up the middle and advanced to second on Joel Clark’s groundout. Alex Gascon singled to rightfield, scoring UCSD’s first run. Gascon stole second and advanced to third on a balk. David Morehead blooped a single over the pitcher, scoring Gascon for the 2-0 lead.

Houston Hernandez led off the third for CSUDH, reaching secondbase on an error. He would later score on a sacfly by Ricky Eda to make it 2-1 UCSD. The Toros would load the bases with two outs. CSUDH tied up the game on UCSD’s third error of the inning on David Leos’s groundball. Matthew Hopps singled to put CSUDH up in front 3-2. All runs in the inning were unearned.

Pinocchio led off the Triton third with a double and would score on Clark’s single up the middle, tying the game at 3-3. With Clark on third and Morehead on first, Hernandez hit a deep sacfly to left, scoring Clark to put the Tritons back in front 4-3.

Matt Lawson and Brian Robinson led off the UCSD fourth with back-to-back singles. David Gomez hit the third straight UCSD single, driving in Lawson to make it 5-3. Craig King then beat out a bunt to load the bases. Pinocchio hit into a fielders’ choice, scoring Robinson. Clark then doubled down the rightfield line, scoring two puting UCSD ahead 8-3. Clark would score on an error on Gascon’s groundball to put the Tritons in front 9-3.

CSUDH would begin to chip away with a double by Isidro Perez and back-to-back singles by Ian Corso and David Leos. At the end of the Toros fifth, UCSD led 9-5.

Lawson and Robinson hit back-to-back doubles to open the fifth and score UCSD’s 10th run of the afternoon. UCSD would load the bases again as Gomez walked and King hit an infield single. Pinocchio hit his third hit of the day, scoing Robinson and Gomez. Joel Clark singled to reload the bases. Gascon then cleared the bases with a double to deep center to put the Tritons ahead 15-5. Hernandez doubled, scoring Gascon. Robinson then hit his second double of the inning, scoring Morehead and Hernandez. At the end of the inning, UCSD had scored nine times and sent 13 batters to the plate and led 18-5.

CSUDH came back to score three runs on four hits in the sixth to make it 18-8 UCSD.

David Morehead hit a two-run homerun in the sixth to get a couple runs back for UCSD 20-8. CSUDH would add three more runs in the game to close out the scoring at 20-11 UCSD.

Byron Grubman pitched two innings of relief for the win to improve to 2-2. The loss went to Dustin Gober who is now 1-1.

Next up for the Toros is a weekend series at Cal State Stanislaus, with the opener a single game Friday.
