SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State Dominguez Hills,
ranked No. 20 in the nation and possibly No. 2 or No. 3 in the
West Region, showed no mercy to Cal State San Bernardino Saturday,
sweeping a doubleheader by scores of 10-1 and 18-2. Both games
ended early due to the mercy rule.
The hot-hitting Toros triggered the mercy rule
in all four games over the weekend, sweeping UC San Diego on the
road by scores of 10-2 and 12-1 to improve to 31-7 overall and
16-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The Coyotes, limited to just three runs and 12
hits in the doubleheader, slipped to 7-30 overall and 4-18 in the
conference.
The Toros feasted on Coyotes pitching,
collecting 28 runs on 32 hits with eight home runs, seven doubles
and a triple in the twinbill.
Valerie Long came on in relief of starter Tracy
Barrientos in the bottom of the third of game one with the Toros
leading 2-1 after Barrientos walked two batters and proceeded to
pitch 3.2 innings of two-hit relief for her 14th win of the
season.
Kate Grodon, Crystal Dingman and Jackie Miller
each homered for the Toros in a 12-hit attack. Dingman's was a
three-run blast in the fifth off Coyotes starter Regina Farfan to
make it 6-1.
In game two, the Toros jumped on Farfan in the
top of the first for five runs, three coming on a three-run homer
by former Hesperia High School star Pebbel Prestwood, who
transferred to Dominguez Hills last fall from Cal State
Stanislaus. Prestwood was three-for-four with the homer, two
doubles and four RBI in the game.
Amy Thomas handcuffed the Coyotes on five hits
to boost her record to 4-0.
Jennifer Wilson, Barrientos, Linda Reyes and
Miller also homered in game two for the Toros as they led 14-0
after 2.5 innings. The Coyotes got their two runs in the bottom of
the third on a single by Paula Greenbaum, a double by Stephanie
Ramirez, a fielder's choice and an RBI single by Melyssa
Balderama.
Groden finished the day with five hits in eight
at bats and three RBI while Miller was four-for-six with two home
runs and four RBI.
The Toros are back in Carson Sunday with a
doubleheader, hosting the UCSD Tritons.
