CARSON, Calif.--(April 13, 2005)--Catcher Chris
Walters went 5 for 6 with two RBI, including his first home run of
the season, to lead visiting Cal Baptist University to a 16-10
non-conference win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Wednesday
afternoon at Toro Field.
CBU (16-17-1) jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead
after three innings. The Lancers used a 5-run second frame,
highlighted by RF Aaron Seuss' three-run home run to go up 7-1.
Cal Baptist added a run in the top of the third
on an RBI single from DH Joey Hendricks making it 8-1. Cal State
Dominguez Hills (18-22) pushed across two runs in the bottom of
the third after an RBI double from DH Matt Hopps (Torrance/So.
Torrance HS) and a throwing error by CBU 3B Chilly Ronquillo,
plating Hopps from second.
The Toros trimmed the deficit to 8-4 in the
fourth, but Cal Baptist answered with three runs in the fifth to
take control, 11-4. In that inning, 2B Steve Goins knocked in two
runs with a two-out double.
Walters led off the sixth for the Lancers with
his first home run of the year for a 12-5 lead. The visitor's
broke the game wide open in the seventh with four more runs, all
unearned, on four hits and a Toro error.
CSUDH scored two more in the seventh, and three
more in the bottom of the ninth, but would get no more for the
final margin, 16-10.
James Hibbard (1-0) came on in the fourth and
pitched four innings to earn the win. Hibbard allowed four runs,
only one earned, on four hits while striking out four. Josh Vick
pitched the eighth and ninth, allowing three runs (none earned) on
three hits. Starter Cory Wells tossed the first three innings
giving up three runs on four hits.
After Walters five hits at the plate, Cal
Baptist was led by Goins who finished 3 for 5 with four RBI. Seuss
also drove in four runs on two hits.
Freshman starter Mike Brown (Santa Cruz/Santa
Cruz HS) took the loss for the Toros. Brown gave up seven runs,
all earned, on eight hits in two innings. Dustin Gober (Long
Beach/Lakewood HS) came on and pitched four innings, allowing six
runs on nine hits. The bright spot on the mound was Hopps, who
started the game as the designated hitter, to pitch the final two
scoreless innings allowing only one hit while striking out a
batter.
CF Isidro Perez (South Gate/South Gate HS), SS
Armando Gomez (Playa del Rey/St. Bernard HS) and 3B Chris Martinez
(Torrance/So. Torrance HS) led the Toros with two hits each.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is back in California
Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action tomorrow traveling
to CS San Bernardino. First pitch is slated for 2:30 PM.
