SAN BERNARDINO -- Senior Abel Casenova chopped
a one-out single over a drawn-in infield with the bases loaded in
the bottom of the seventh Saturday to lift Cal State San
Bernardino to an 8-7 victory over Cal State Dominguez in the
second game of their CCAA doubleheader at Fiscalini Field.
The Toros erupted for nine runs in the ninth
inning of the opener to win that game 17-6 and take the three-game
series, 2-1. The Coyotes are now 21-13 overall and 18-11 in the
CCAA while the Toros are 20-23 overall and 10-18 in the CCAA.
In the opener, the Toros broke a 4-4 tie in the
seventh with two runs, added two more in the eighth and then the
flood gates opened in the ninth as CSUDH scored nine times on
seven hits. Eda, the CCAA's leading home run hitter, belted two
homers to give him 15 on the season and drove in four runs in the
14-hit Toro attack. David Leos had three RBI on two hits in four
at bats.
Chris Borchers (2-6) went six innings for the
victory while Owen provided three innings of two-hit relief,
yielding just one run, a solo homer by Rice in the bottom of the
ninth. Kyle Holden (4-3) took the loss.
In the nightcap, senior Aaron Rice, the CCAA's
leading hitter, led off the Coyotes seventh in a 7-7 tie with a
single to center, and was replaced by pinch runner Alan Eldridge.
Eldridge was sacrificed to second by Billy Ermert and Mario Mancha
was intentionally walked. Reliever Ryan Owen then walked
pinch-hitter Billy Hall to load the bases.
The Toros sent in freshman Matthew Hopps to the
mound to face Casenova, who delivered a chopper over the
shortstop's head to bring in Eldridge with the winning run. Derek
Baker picked up the win in relief while Gary Scott, who shut down
the Coyotes offense for 4.1 innings, took the loss.
After the Toros scored two in the top of the
first off Coyotes' starter Jared Eichelberger, the Coyotes evened
the count on solo homers by Rice (his 11th of the season) and Jake
Puckett in the bottom of the first.
The Coyotes then scored four in the second
inning for a 6-2 lead, the big blow a three-run homer by catcher
Scott Weiner. Ermert and Rice hit back-to-back doubles off Toros
staarter David Leyva for the other run. Michael Rossano Jr. made
it 7-2 in the third with an RBI single.
The Toros rallied for four runs in the next
three innings to make it 7-6 and then tied the score in the top of
the seventh on Ricky Eda's sacrifice fly that scored Houston
Hernandez.
The Toros host Grand Canyon in a single game
Wednesday. First pitch is 2:30 p.m.
