LOS ANGELES -- Visiting Cal State Dominguez
Hills used three runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings as
the Toros earned an 8-4 win over Cal State L.A. on Friday
afternoon at Reeder Field.
CSUDH improves to 23-30, 13-24 CCAA, while
CSULA falls to 20-23, 15-22 CCAA.
Cal State L.A. got off to a 2-0 lead as Matt
Winkelman's double down the left field line in the bottom of the
first scored Kyle Williams, who walked two batters earlier. CSULA
scored again in the fourth inning as Henry Contreras singled to
right field to score Beard, who opened the frame with a double to
center field.
CSUDH tied the game with two runs in the top of
the fifth inning, getting an RBI double from Chris Martinez and an
RBI groundout by Jose Montes to knot the game at 2-2. CSULA
reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Rene
Gonzalez's single against a drawn-in infield scored Beard, who
again had opened an inning with a double, as the Golden Eagles
took a 3-2 lead.
The Toros took control in the seventh and
eighth innings, taking advantage of back-to-back walks to open
each frame. In the seventh inning, CSUDH got a two-RBI single by
Montes while a two-RBI double by Matthew Hopps in the eighth
inning helped push the CSUDH margin to 8-3.
Cal State L.A. added a final run in the ninth
inning as Joey Molina was hit by a pitch to open the inning, moved
up twice on wild pitches and came home on a sac fly to right by
Winkelman.
Winkelman and Beard paced CSULA offensively
while Hopps went 3-for-5 for CSUDH. Both teams hit the ball well
on the afternoon as CSUDH knocked 12 hits while Cal State L.A. had
11.
Chris Borchers (4-7) picked up the complete
game win for CSUDH, scattering 11 hits and fanning five.
Brandon Higelin (5-6) took the loss for CSULA,
allowing 11 hits and five runs while fanning seven batters in
seven innings.
CSULA and CSUDH will end the 2005 season with
an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday morning at Reeder Field.
