Softball’s Long, Reyes Sweep Final CCAA Weekly Honors
Duo led Toros to sweep over Grand Canyon in final doubleheader of regular season
May 23, 2005

Walnut Creek, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills senior pitcher Valerie Long (Stockton, CA/St. Mary’s HS) and junior infielder / designated player Linda Reyes (Garden Grove, CA/Pacifica HS/St. John’s) were named respective Wilson / California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week of May 2-8, it was announced today by the CCAA office.

Reyes, a junior from Garden Grove, led the Toros to a doubleheader sweep of Grand Canyon to close the 2005 regular season. She hit .800 (4-for-5) with two home runs, five runs batted in and posted a 2.000 slugging percentage as CSUDH won both games handily, 9-0 and 9-1. Reyes, who earned her first CCAA Player of the Week honor in 2004, recently was selected to the All-West Region Tournament team, hosted by Cal State Dominguez Hills for the first time in the school’s history.

A Stockton native, Long tossed a 5-inning, one-hit 9-0 shutout over Grand Canyon to earn her then-20th win of the season, fanning three against only one walk. This is the third CCAA weekly honor Long received this season, in addition to earning first-team Academic All-America, first-team All-Region and first-team All-CCAA honors as she led the Toros pitching staff with a 21-5 record, establishing the CSUDH career marks for wins and strikeouts, and the single-season mark for strikeouts in her final campaign in Cardinal Red & Gold

This marks the second time this season CSUDH has swept both Pitcher / Player of the Week awards, following the week of April 4-10 when Long and pitcher / 1B Jackie Miller (Bremerton, WA/Central Kitsap HS/CS Stanislaus) earned their respective honors.

The Toros, who established a combined 27 team and individual records this year, finished the season with a program-best 46-12 overall mark. Ousted in the 2nd round of the NCAA Far West Regional on May 13, CSUDH ranked 10th nationally at the end of the regular season and returns their top nine hitters from this year’s record-breaking squad.
