CARSON, Calif.--Sophomore forward Kei Kamara
(Lawndale/Leuzinger HS), the 2004 California Collegiate Athletic
Association Most Valuable Player, scored two minutes in the second
overtime period to give Cal State Dominguez Hills a 3-2 win over
visiting Concordia University Friday afternoon at Toro Field in
both teams' season openers.
CSUDH (1-0-0) found them themselves down early
in the 17th minute of play when CU's Chris Gould knocked in a
half-volley at the top of the penalty box and drilled his shot to
the left corner for a 1-0 lead.
Nick Ripetto (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) tied
the game just before the end of the first half taking a short
cross inside the box and blasted his shot past the diving Eagle
goalkeeper to knot the game, 1-1.
Concordia took a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute
when Jeff Clark took a deflection inside the box and punched his
shot past Toro goalie Kyle Polak (Huntington Beach/Fountain Valley
HS) for his first goal of the season.
Cal State Dominguez Hills' Jesse Graham (San
Diego/Pt. Loma HS) tied the game again in the 83rd minute taking a
nice pass from Kamara and drilled his shot just inside the near
post to set up overtime.
Both teams put on a lackluster performance in
their season openers. The Toros had trouble connecting passes and
could not seem to find their rhythm the entire match despite
outshooting the Eagles 26-8. Concordia played a man down the final
42 minutes after David Defelice was ejected for unsportsmanlike
behavior.
CSUDH, ranked No. 15 in the NSCAA/adidas
preseason poll, returns to action hosting regional rival Western
Washington University on Monday. First kick is slated for 3:00
p.m.
