SAN BERNARDINO -- Francisco Corona scored twice
and assisted on a third goal Saturday to lead Cal State Dominguez
Hills, ranked No. 4 in the nation and No.1 in the Far West Region,
to a 4-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in a CCAA men's
soccer match at Coyotes Premier Field.
Corona, an all-CCAA first-team selection last
year, put the Toros up 2-0 in the 51st minute by converting a
penalty kick after a teammate was fouled in the penalty area.
Minutes later, he delivered a nice crossing pass to Nick Ripetto
who delivered the goal for a 3-0 lead.
The senior forward then completed the scoring
in the 76th minute, taking a pass from Jesse Graham and finishing
the attack for his fourth goal of the season.
Meanwhile, the Toros (6-1-1 overall and 2-1-1
in the CCAA) put the clamps on the Coyotes' offense that had
produced three straight CCAA victories. Goalkeeper Kyle Polak made
six saves to earn his second shutout of the season. The loss
dropped CSUSB, ranked No. 8 in the Far West Region, to 4-3-1
overall and 3-1 in the CCAA.
Kei Kamara, the CCAA player of the year in
2004, got his fifth goal of the season for the Toros less than six
minutes into the match as he broke free from a defender and drove
a shot past Coyotes goalkeeper Lucas Pepi, who came off his line
to challenge.
Both Cal State Dominguez Hills soccer teams
take the field again Monday in home matches with Grand Canyon. The
men's play begins at 12:30 p.m., followed by the women at 3:00
p.m.
