CARSON, Calif.--Sophomore forward Sammy Rivas
(Long Beach/CS Fullerton) scored two times to lead host Cal State
Dominguez Hills to a 3-0 shutout victory over Grand Canyon
University in non-conference action Monday afternoon at Toro
Stadium.
With the win CSUDH, ranked No. 4 in last week's
NSCAA/adidas national poll, elevate to 7-1-1. The loss drops GCU
to 3-6-2.
Carmelo Terranova (Saugus/Saugus HS) scored the
only goal the Toro defense would need in the first half. Terranova
took a rebound off the post and one-timed his close range shot to
the back of the net for a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute.
In the 54th minute, Rivas scored the first of
his two goals taking a ball from Edgar Guzman (Long Beach/Long
Beach CC) and hit a 30-yard blast over Grand Canyon goalie Vincent
Ciro Licciardi to give CSUDH a 2-0 advantage.
Rivas then closed out the scoring at 86:27
taking a pass from Devin Schiller (Torrance/So. Torrance HS) and
beat Licciardi to the far post for the 3-0 final.
Despite scoring three goals, Cal State
Dominguez Hills took a season-low seven shots in the game. Grand
Canyon would only muster four shots in the match.
The Toros are back in home action this Saturday
taking on defending NCAA II National Champion Seattle University.
First kick is scheduled for 3 PM.
