December 10, 2005

Complete Box Score

Carson, CA – Senior guard Tameka Blue (Watsonville, CA/Santa Cruz HS) recorded 19 points and eight rebounds in her fifth straight game scoring in double figures to lead the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team in non-conference competiton against visiting San Diego Christian College. With the win the Toros end their two game loosing streak and improve to 3-2 overall, while the Hawks fall to 1-6.

The Toros would not even try to make the game close, starting out on a 27-2 run over the first 13 minuets. The Hawks would struggle mightily, scoring their first basket at the16:39 mark, and not scoring again until the clock showed 7:05. SDCC was not able to find their offense, and would shoot only 12% from the field compared to the Toros 50%. With the lead growing quickly the Toros would use the opportunity to get their bench in the game. In all, the Toros would have nine different players score baskets, compared to SDCC with only two. Sophomore Alana Bailey (Altadena, CA/John Muir HS) would lead all first half scores with 10 points, one less than the entire Hawks team. The half would finally come to an end with the Toro up 30 points, 41-11.

With a 30-point deficit facing the Hawks to begin the second half most teams would find it hard to come out of the locker room with any kind of effort. However, the Hawks showed great determination to leave an impression on the Toros. The offense that was nowhere to be found in the first half finally showed up. SDCC would more than triple their offensive output from the first half, eventually winning the second half, 38-31. In the second half the Hawks would nail 10 three-point shots, including a stretch where they hit five in a row.

Although the Toros offense may have cooled from the first half, they still shot nearly 40% from the field, and were perfect from the line. In the end the first half lead was too much for the Hawks to make up for, and they would fall 72-49.

The Hawks were led by J’ness Flowers who garnered game high scoring honors with 22 points, including four three pointers. Also scoring in double figures for the Hawks was Amy Showers with 13 points, including three from beyond the arc.

For the Toros Bailey would chip in 16 points, including going 4-4 from the free throw line and Jessica Liang (Alhambra, CA/Mark Keppel HS) would also score in double figures 11 points. On the board Michelle Kribell (Buena Park, CA/Western HS) had game high honors with nine rebounds, and also added seven points.

The Toros continue their non-conference home stand next week taking on Biola University on Friday and Texas A&M-Kingsville University on Saturday, both games tip off at 5:30pm.
