Carson, CA - The Toros would use a balanced
scoring attack to keep the Texas A&M-Kingsville defense
guessing all night long. Brittney Blankenship (Palmdale,
CA/Palmdale HS) recorded her second double-double of the
season with 14 points and a game high 11 rebounds to lead the
Toros to a 54-43 women's basketball win. With the win the Toros
have now won three games in a row, and improve to 5-2 on the
season. While the visiting Javelinas fall to 3-6.

What a difference a day makes, the Toro offense
that shot 52.1% last night and put up 95 points seemed no where to
be found. CSUDH would stumble out the blocks, turning the ball
over multiple times and not being able to find the bottom of the
net to begin the game. The Javelinas, however, would match the
Toros slow start and the two teams would stumble along together
over the first nine minutes of play.
The two teams would begin to tighten up their
play, trading baskets over the next five minutes, with the Toros
only able to build a small lead. With a little less than six
minutes to play Blankenship would go to work, scoring five
straight points to help the Toros maintain their slight lead.
CSUDH would use a 10-3 run over the last four
minutes of the half to go into the locker room with a 27-18 lead.
In the second half the Toros would spread the
ball around, using baskets by six different players on six trips
down the floor capped off by a layup by Ree Browne (Torrance,
CA/South Torrance HS) to extend their lead to 21 with just
under 14 minutes left.
From that point on the Toros seemed to put
things on cruise control, and would watch TAMKU slowly chip away
at the lead. Anglea Trotter would cut the once 21-point Toro lead
to just 10 after a free throw with two and a half minutes left in
the game. However, the comeback seemed to be too little too late,
as game would slowly come to an end with the Toros using every
last second on the shot clock in their last few possessions to
keep the ball out of the hands of the Javelinas.
For TAMUK, Trotter would garner game high
scoring honors with 15 points and six rebounds, while Latasha
Davis would also score in double figures with 11 points.
The Toros would not have anyone else in double
figures besides Blankenship; however, they would have eight other
players contribute scoring to the offense. Tameka Blue
(Watsonville, CA/Santa Cruz HS) and Jessica Liang
(Alhambra, CA/Mark Keppel HS) lead the rest of the scoring,
chipping in nine and eight points respectively.
The Toros will be in action in two weeks,
Wednesday, December 28th as they travel to Fullerton, CA to take
on Hope International University, tip off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Then they will return home Friday, January 6th to resume CCAA play
against Cal State Bakersfield, tip off at 5:30 p.m.
