Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills
sophomore Kevin Crockett (Long Beach, CA/CSULB) drained
five-consecutive 3-pointers to begin the second half as his
28-point outburst highlighted the Toros dominating 99-49 win
over visiting Dominican University Friday night in the Torodome.
With the victory, CSUDH improves to 3-5 on the season while the
Penguins fall to 6-7.
The Toros scored the games first 14
points in the contests opening 5:30, led by Mario Malaves
(Emeryville, CA/Bakersfield College) six and Shamont Browns
(Jamaica, NY/Riverside CC) five points. After the Penguins
trimmed CSUDHs advantage to 25-15 over the next seven
minutes, Crockett connected for seven-consecutive points to cap a
12-4 Toro run that gave the hosts a 37-19 lead with just over four
minutes remaining before halftime. DU would sink six-consecutive
free throws over the final minutes to shave CSUDHs lead to
39-27, but a Brown jumper would end the first-half scoring,
sending the Toros into the locker room with a 41-27 cushion.
Crockett erupted for five 3-pointers in a span
of six minutes to start the second half, staking CSUDH to a
comfortable 64-32 cushion. The rest of the Toros would follow
Crocketts lead, pushing their advantage to 87-40 at the 7:15
mark, the last two coming on a monstrous one-handed dunk by Trevon
Bryant (Tifton, GA/Compton CC) that sent the spirited Toro
crowd into a frenzy. CSUDH would cruise over the final seven
minutes, eventually sending Dominican home with a 99-49 loss.
Crockett finished with 28 points on 10-of-13
shooting from the field, including a sizzling 6-for-8 performance
from behind the 3-point line. Malave chipped in with 18 points on
7-of-12 from the floor while Brown rounded out CSUDHs top
scorers with 17 points of his own. DUs Bennet Woodward
notched 11 points for the Penguins, but CSUDH shot 53.3% from the
field while holding DU to 38.1%, also out-assisting the Penguins
22 to 11. The Toros Brown pulled down 10 boards to give him
the sole double-double on the night, while sharing team-high
assist honors (four) with Crockett and Carlos Rivers (Long
Beach, CA/LA Valley College).
The Toros kick off the new year with CCAA
contests against Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, January 6,
followed by Cal State L.A. on Saturday, January 7. Tipoff for both
contests begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Torodome.
