UC San Diego Tritons (10-2, 5-1 CCAA)
UC San Diego is currently ridding a six-game winning streak,
with wins last weekend against Cal State San Bernardino and
Cal State Monterey Bay.
Against CSUSB, the Tritons were led by the
CCAAs leading scorer, Leora Juster, with 22 points and
four steals. Hillary Hansen and Michelle Osier also scored in
double figures with 20 and 10 points, respectively, in the
65-59 win.
In the second half, the Tritons would hold
an 11-point lead with just 4:45 left in the game before the
Coyotes began to make their run. Over the next 10 minutes UCSD
would see their lead dwindle to just four. UCSD would then
miss a free throw to give the ball back to the Coyotes,
however, two costly turnovers would cost CSUSB a chance to
complete the comeback.
The following night against the Otters, the
Tritons would put five players in double figures, led by
Juster and Oseir with 19 points apiece. Meaghan Moud added 15
points, while Hansen and Briana Hinga chipped in 11 and 10
points, respectively.
On the season the Tritons are led by Justers
21.2 points, five rebounds, and four assists per game. Osier
and Hansen are also in double figures with 12.4 and 12.3
points per game.
As a team, UCSD has a +10 scoring advantage
over their opponents and is out shotting their competition
from the three-point line .382 to .309. |

Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes (8-5,
2-4 CCAA)
CSUSB split last weekend, dropping a 59-65 decision to UC San
Diego, and picking up a 56-52 win against Cal State Monterey
Bay for their second conference victory of the season.
In the loss to the Tritons, Tamara Thomas
would lead the Coyotes with 14 points and five assists.
Desirae Martinez also scored in double figures, adding 12
points in the effort. Mariqueta Starling would tie for game-
high rebounding honors with 10, while chipping in seven
points.
The next night against the Otters, Starling
would garner game-high scoring honors with 20 points, nine
rebounds, and three steals. Martinez would also be in double
figures, adding 16 points.
The Coyotes would shoot 21 percent in the
first half, and committed 15 turnovers to put themselves down
24-8 at one point. However, CSUSB would slowly creep its way
back into the game and go into the locker room only down eight
at 30-22.
CSUSB would turn it on coming out of the
locker room and complete its comeback, building a 46-37 lead
on a 24-7 run over the first 10 minutes. CSUMB would get back
in the game and close the gap to just one three different
times with the last coming with just 1:24 left in the game.
But, CSUMB failed to convert from the free throw line down the
stretch and the Coyotes capitalized on their charity stripe
opportunities to finally put the Otters away.
On the season the Coyotes Christina
Day and Tamara Thomas average double figures with 11.7 and
10.2 points, respectively. |

CSUS & CSUC Recap: The Toros ended
their four game homestand with a spilt, picking up a 79-56 win
over Cal State Stanisluas, before falling 52-75 to the reigning
CCAA champions, Chico State.
Against CSUS the Toros would use a strong
18-point first half by Jessica Liang (including five three-point
shots) and a stronger 21-point second half by Tameka Blue to run
away with the victory.
Overall, the Toros would use a balanced attack,
posting four players in double figures. Blue would lead all
scorers with 29 points, followed by Liang with 21, Alana Bailey
with 11, and Brittney Blankenship with 10.
Against Chico State the Toros poor second half
would allow the Wildcats to run away with the game. Tameka Blue
would record her 11th double-digit scoring game of the season with
18 points, but the Wildcats would put four players in double
figures, and double the Toros offensive output in the secod
half.
The Toros hung tough in the first half and went
into the locker room only down one at 30-31.
Chico would open the second half on a 17-5 run
over the first five minutes to take a 13-point lead. The Toros
would cut the lead to 10 with 12:24, however, that was as close as
the Toros would get the rest of the game. Chico State would pile
on the points over the remaining time left in the game, ending the
game on a 27-14 run.
News, Notes, & Other Toro-Bits
Unbalanced Attack: With Tameka Blue
putting up the best offensive numbers of her career, she is once
again leading the Toro attack. However, that attack has lost the
balance that led to the success of last seasons team. Last
year the Toros had three players averaging double figures,
compared to this season with only two. The offensive load seems to
be squarely placed on the shoulders of Blue, who has risen to the
challenge and is averaging five more points a game than last
seasons output.
More Records For Blue: Before the
season began, senior guard Tameka Blue had already cemented her
name in the CSUDH record books. However, last week against Cal
State Stanislaus, she inked her name in two more columns. Her 18
made free throws broke the previous mark of 13 set by Tracee
Lewis, while her 19 attempted free throws broke the old record of
16 set by Zipporah Chase. Entering the week she is fourth all-time
in career scoring with 1,233 points, and her current season
average of 19.1 ppg would place her third all-time for scoring
average in a season, while her career scoring average of 13.5 ppg
puts her in a tie for eighth place. Her current career free throw
percentage of .801 and her 464 career assists are the best
all-time. Blue is also only 26 made free throws behind Faye Hagan,
the all-time leader, with 328.
Death...Taxes...And Liang From Outside:
Although the Toros have gotten off to a mediocre start this
season, the one constant has been the outside shooting of
sophomore guard Jessica Liang. Through 12 games she has nailed a
team-leading 27 three-point shots. Consistency has been her key,
hitting at least one in every game this season. Liang has had four
games where she hit three or more (including six against Cal State
Stanislaus), and four games with two. In a season thus far marred
by inconsistent play, Liang was been one of the few Toros with
solid, consistent play. In conference play, Liang is leading the
CCAA in three-point shots made as well as in percentage.
