Opponents Scouting Report

Cal Poly Pomona (6-9, 3-5 CCAA)

About CPP: The Broncos enter the Torodome after dropping both games last weekend, and four out of their last five. The first was a 78-55 loss at the hands of Cal State San Bernardino and the second a 68-36 loss to UC San Diego.

Against CSUSB the Broncos would fall behind early, and watch CSUSB jump out to a 15-8 lead. CPP would respond and cut the led to just one point after consecutive three-point shots. However, the Coyotes would respond to the Bronco charge and go into the locker room with a 38-28 lead.

The Broncos would get off to a terrible start in the second half, falling behind by 17 points in the first 1:40, of the period and never recover.

The following night against UCSD the Broncos would not fair much better. In the first half CPP would keep the game close, trailing only by four points at 17-13 with 6:54 remaining. However, the Tritons would close out the half on a 16-2 run to open up a 29-17 advantage.

The Broncos started the second half in a funk, and scored only six points in the first 10 minutes of play. UCSD, meanwhile, would build a 48-26 lead, and lead by at least 19 points the rest of the way.

On the season CPP is led by Ashley Moody and DeJa Blevins with 12.4 and 11.7 points per game, respectively. As a team the Broncos have dominated the offensive glass, accumulating 100 more offensive rebounds than their opponents.

Rivalry Info-CPP: This will be the 60th meeting between the two teams, with Pomona dominating the series, 51-8. Last season the Broncos swept the Toros, first in a2 85-78 overtime win at the Torodome (the only home conference loss of the season), and then again at Pomona, 81-78.

Cal State Monterey Bay (2-13, 1-7 CCAA)
About CSUMB: The Otters make the trip down to Carson, CA on a five-game losing streak. Last weekend the Otters dropped a 68-79 decision to Cal State Bakersfield, and then a 65-83 decision to Cal State L.A.

Against Cal State Bakersfield the Otters would remain close in the first half, tying the game at 24-24 on a pair of free throws by Jennifer Lopez. After a CSUB run to go up by seven, the Otters would respond with a 12-0 run and regain the lead at 42-31 with a minute left, going into the locker room up 47-42.

In the second half, CSUMB would push their lead to seven at 51-44. However, the no. 19-ranked Roadrunners would use an 18-2 run to grab the lead at 62-53, never letting CSUMB back in the game.

Against Cal State L.A. the two teams would be on even ground. With 3:13 to go Claudia Rodriguez hit a free throw to close the margin to one at 28-27. Andrea Hanshew would score six points as part of an 8-0 run to put CSUMB up at the half, 36-27.

In the second half, CSUMB would push their lead to 11 over the first three minutes of play. CSULA would slowly chip away at the lead and come within one at 47-46 with 12 minutes left. The Otters would then see the Golden Eagles explode on a 25-2 run over the next six minutes to put the game away.

Britnea Moore and Lopez are leading the Otter offense, with 9.8 and 8.8 points, respectively. CSUMB would start the new year with its first-ever CCAA victory, with a 76-73 win over San Francisco State on January 6th.

Rivalry Info-CSUMB: This will be the 3rd meeting between the two teams, with the Toros undefeated against the Otters. In the Otters inaugural CCAA season the Toros would take both games, first in Seaside, CA, 80-59, and then in the Torodome, 84-67.

UCSD & CSUSB RECAP: Against UCSD the Toros would struggle in the first half, only putting up 19 points on 6-of-26 shooting to go into the locker room down, 34-19, the 15-point half-time deficit being the largest of the season thus far.

The Toros would respond after the break, putting up 33 points in the second half, matching the offensive output of the Tritons. However, the Toros would just not have an answer for Leora Juster, who poured in 32 points on the night and led the Tritons to a 67-52 win.

Overall the Toros would put two players in double figures, as Alana Bailey and Brittney Blankenship contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The following night the Toros would shake-up the starting line-up, with three players starting for the first time. The new look line-up would pan out, with the Toros picking up the 60-52 win, ending the Toros two-game losing streak.

Tameka Blue, Blankenship and Brandi McGinest would all score in double-figures, with 13,13, and 10 points, respectively. McGinest along with Ajuanee Balwdin would tie for team-high rebounding honors with five apiece.

The Toros would rebound from the poor shooting of the night before, shooting nearly 48 percent from the field in the win.

Jessica Liang would continue her three-point streak, nailing a three in her 12th straight game, while Blue would record her 10th double-digit scoring game of the season, and come within one point of third place all-time in career scoring.

TOP 10 IN REGION: For the second year in a row, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team has been ranked in the first NCAA Regional ranking of the season, it was announced by the NCAA. The Toros check in at the No. 9 spot.

Eight teams per region qualify for the postseason, with the winner of both the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) receiving automatic bids. The final regional poll will determine which other six teams are awarded the six at-large berths, with those teams joining the CCAA and GNAC regular-season champions in the West Regional of the NCAA II National Tournament, taking place from March 10-13 at a site to be determined.

  Team Div. II Region
1 UC San Diego 8-2 8-1
2 Cal State Bakersfield 11-1 9-1
3 Western Washington 11-1 11-1
4 Cal State L.A. 9-1 7-1
5 Chico State 10-2 10-2
6 Seattle Pacific 6-4 5-4
7 Sonoma State 5-5 5-5
8 Northwest Nazarene 5-4 3-4
9 Cal St. Dominguez Hills 4-4 3-4
10 Humboldt State 6-6 6-6

SHARP SHOOTER: Sophomore Jessica Liang is the resident sharp-shooter on the Toros 2005-06 squad. Currently, she leads the team in three-point field goals made and field goal percentage. Her 19 made and .500 percentage also place her first and third in the CCAA (conference games only). The Alhambra native has come into her own this season since taking up the starting position left vacant by graduated senior Octavia Askew. Liang is averaging 10 more minutes, 3.5 more points, one more rebound per game.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: Freshman Kayla Montalvo saw little action heading into last weekend, only getting minutes in seven of the Toros first 12 games. However, during the blowout loss at the hands of the top seeded team in the west region, UC San Diego, coach Girard put the freshman in for six minutes at the end of the game. In that small amount of time, Montalvo recorded five points, a steal, and a rebound. As a result of her solid play, she found herself in the starting line-up for the first time this season the next night against Cal State San Bernardino making her one of only three freshmen to start a game for the Toros. She would continue her solid play with six points, two rebounds, an assist, and a blocked shot.

COUNTDOWN TO 400, MILESTONE WITHIN REACH: With the eight wins thus far, the 05-06 Toros are inching closer to the school’s 400th women’s basketball win. The Toros have 397 women’s basketball victories entering this week, with head coach Van Girard accounting for 230 of them. Conceivably the Toros could reach their 400th win Friday, February 3, when they host Sonoma State.

TOROS RECORD BY STARTING LINEUP:

  • Bailey, Blankenship, Blue, Liang, Kribell -- 4-6
  • Bailey, Baldwin, Blankenship, Liang, Kribell -- 3-0
  • Blue, Kribell, Kyles, McGinest, Montalvo -- 1-0
