Sonoma State Seawovles (8-9, 5-5 CCAA)
About SSU: Sonoma is currently on a two-game losing
streak, and has dropped five of its last six games.
SSU would drop both games last week, the
first a 65-69 loss to UC San Diego and the second a 51-68 loss
to Cal State San Bernardino. Sonoma would hang tough against
the No. 2 seed in the West Region, going into the locker room
tied at 33-33. Both teams would shoot well in the first half,
with both teams just over 41%. In the second half SSU would
improve its shooting percentage to 44%, however, UC San Diego
kicked it into another gear and shot 50% from the floor. The
following night it appeared as though the Seawovles were still
dazed from the loss the night before. SSU would only shoot 28%
from the floor in the first half, and find themselves down
22-27 at the intermission. In the second half, the SSU defense
would seemingly dissapear, as they gave up 41 second half
points to the Coyotes, while CSUSB shot nearly 50% from the
field. Jessica Jennings leads Sonoma with 14.5 points and 4.1
rebounds this season. Although the Seawolves do not have any
other players averaging double figures, they do have six
players averaging six or more points per game.
Rivalry Info-SSU: This will be the
30th meeting between the two teams, with the Toros clinging to
a 16-13 lead. Earlier this season the 8th ranked Seawolves
handed the Toros their first conference loss of the season,
winning 72-58 in Rohnert Park. |

San Francisco State Gatos (5-12, 0-10
CCAA)
About SFSU: The Gators are currently still seeking
their first conference win as they make the long trip down to
Carson, CA.
Last week SFSU dropped two games, the first
a 56-62 loss to Cal State San Bernardino, and the second a
57-93 loss to UC San Diego. Against CSUSB both teams struggled
offensively, with neither team able to get into double-figures
in the first ten minutes. The first half would end with the
Gators in front by three at 24-21, despite being outshot by
the Coyotes 26.9% to 23.3%. CSUSB would turn the ball over 28
times, resulting in 20 more shot attempts for SFSU. The second
half would see the two teams battle to a 40-40 tie over the
first ten minutes. The Gators would find themselves down three
with 51 seconds left. However, the Coyotes would convert their
free throws and hold the Gators scoreless over the remaining
time. Life the following night would not get much easier, as
SFSU took on UC San Diego. The Gators would be down 19-12 in
the first eight minutes of the game, and that was as close as
they would get. The Tritons would use an 11-2 run to increase
their lead to 30-14 and never look back, eventually finishing
off the Gators by 36 points. On the season, the Gators are led
by Farryn Lewis with 14.2 points per game, also adding 5.6
rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. Chloe Grimm and Leslie
Miller are also in double figures with 12.1 points and 7.2
rebounds, and 11.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per
game, respectively.
Rivalry Info-SFSU: This will be the
23rd meeting between the two teams, with the Toros leading the
series 15-8. In their first meeting this season the Toros
picked up their first conference win, winning 72-68. |

Version of This Release
CPP & CSUMB Recap:
Last week the Toros cruised to a pair of blow-out victories over
Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Monterey Bay.
Against CPP the Toros tightened up their
second-half defense to turn a two-point advantage at the break
into a 73-51 win. Blue led the charge with 26 points, seven
assists, and five steals while going 8-for-8 from the free throw
line.
The two teams would battle in the first half
with CSUDH only able to gain a small 31-29 halftime lead.
After the intermission, the Toros would build
an eight point lead over the first three minutes of play. Momentum
would continue to be on the Toros side as their lead was pushed to
22 at the 7:54 mark. The CSUDH lead would only dip below 20 twice
the rest of the game as the Toros cruised to a 22-point win.
Against CSUMB the Toros' 36-to-14 free throw
advantage proved too much for the visitors as they ran away with
the 76-50 victory. Blue would again garner top scoring honors with
18 points, while only playing 10 minutes in the second half. CSUDH
would jump out to a 12-point lead at 19-7 after a three by Jessica
Liang with 12:11 remaining. CSUDH would push its lead to 20 at
31-11 over the next four minutes. The Toros offense would go cold
for a four-minutes span, but the defense would not let them down.
The Toros would use four blocks, two courtesy of Ree Browne, and
two steals to keep the Otters off the scoreboard.
The second half was a repeat of the first, with
the Toros maintaining a 20-plus point lead the entire way, and
pushing it to 30 at one point.
News, Notes, & Other Toro-Bits
STILL AT No. 9: The Cal State Dominguez
Hills womens basketball team is still ranked at No. 9 in the
second NCAA Farwest Regional ranking of the season, it was
announced by the NCAA.
If the Toros are to make the regionals for the
second-straight year, the next two weeks could determine their
fate. Over the next four games the Toros will battle against three
ranked teams, including No. 1 Cal State Bakersfield, No. 3 Cal
State L.A., and No. 8 Sonoma State. All three of these ranked
teams gave the Toros losses in the first half of the season, so
the fate of the postseason will rest on whether CSUDH can avenge
the early season defeats.

AND THEN THERE WAS ONE: Senior Tameka
Blue proved that her four-point performance against UC San Diego
two weeks ago was a fluke, responding this week with a 26-point
performance against Cal Poly Pomona and an 18-point effort against
Cal State Monterey Bay, while only playing 10 minutes in the
second half against the Otters. With her combined 44 points, Blue
jumped over two former Toros and now stands only behind Faye Hagan
in career points. Her current average of 18.1 ppg places her
nearly one and a half points above what she must average over the
remaining 10 games to become the greatest scorer in CSUDH history.
PUTTING THE D IN DH: Although
the Toros may only be in the middle of the pack in conference play
this season, the Toro defense has proven quite a challenge for
opposing teams. CSUDH is currently No. one in field goal defense,
and three-point field goal defense, and only 0.4 behind the leader
in points allowed per game. The Toros have held all but one team
to under their scoring average, and even in the Toros losses this
season, they have managed to keep the other team from reaching
their season average.

Countdown to 400, Milestone Within Reach:
With the 10 wins thus far, the 05-06 Toros are inching closer
to the schools 400th womens basketball win. With 399
womens basketball victories entering this week, the Toros
are now one win away, with head coach Van Girard accounting for
232 of the wins.
The Toros first shot at 400 will be this
Friday, as they take on Sonoma State.
