POMONA Cal Poly Pomona banged out 14
hits and posted a 7-4 win over California Collegiate Athletic
Association foe Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday in a
non-conference baseball game. The Broncos (1-0) broke open a tight
game with four runs in the eighth inning against the Toros. With
the loss, CSUDH drops to 0-1, as the team's previous game against
Biola was deemed an exhibition contest.
Marc Evans had three hits to lead the Bronco
attack. Kyle Todd pitched five strong innings to get the win,
Justin Carty pitched two scoreless innings and Kirk Gross finished
off the last two innings to pick up the save.
Cal State Dominguez Hills got an impressive
starting outing from Jason Garcia, who scattered 10 hits and
allowed only three runs through six innings. Gus Hernandez pitched
a scoreless seventh inning for the Toros, but the Broncos extended
their 3-2 lead to 7-2 with their four-run eighth-inning rally.
The Broncos scored two runs in the second
inning to stake Todd to the early lead. Jake Mendrin doubled with
one out and scored on a single by Evans. Ben Lebovitz and Chase
Stroupe followed with singles to load the bases and Chris Janowicz
singled to drive in Evans.
The Toros tied the game at 2-2 with single runs
in the third and fourth innings. Martin Conde picked up an infield
single to lead off the third inning and took second on an error.
Conde took third on a groundout by Fred Medina and scored on a
two-out double by Houston Hernandez. In the fourth, Jason Klug
doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a single by Matthew
Hopps.
Cal Poly Pomona regained the lead in the bottom
of the inning on a two-out triple by Stroupe that drove in
Mendrin.
The Broncos picked up four runs on four hits in
the eighth. Kevin Falls led off with a single and moved to third
on a single by Mendrin. Evans followed with a double to score
Falls. Stroupe was intentionally walked with one out to load the
bases and Janowicz followed with a single to make it 5-2. Robbie
Carter delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2 and the final run
scored on a balk.
Cal State Dominguez Hills' next game is Friday
when the team hosts Concordia.
