Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles (14-5, 8-4
CCAA)
About CSULA: The Golden Eagles split last weekend
series, first falling to UC San Diego 80-62, and then picking
up a 64-58 win against Cal State San Bernardino.
Against the Tritons Amber Fouse scored 22
points, including 6-of-9 from beyond the arc, but UC San Diegos
dominating first half, in which they outscored CSULA 43 to 22,
proved too much for the Golden Eagles to overcome. In addition
to Fouse, Tiffaney Maddox would record a double-double with 15
points and 10 rebounds, while adding a pair of blocks and
steals. Monica Tokoro would also score in double figures,
chipping in 10 points and five assists.
The following night against Cal State San
Bernardino, Tokoro and Fouse would once again lead the Golden
Eagle charge, with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Jaemy Oda
would be a spark off the bench, chipping in eight points,
seven rebounds, and three steals.
On the season CSULA is led by Monica Tokoros
14.1 points and 4.8 assists per game. Amber Fouse is second
with 10.9 points per game, while shooting 43 percent from the
three-point line. Just scoring under double figures are
Charmaine Utz and Shayna Stanley, with 9.9 and 9.4 points per
game, respectively.
Rivalry Info-CSULA: This will be
the 59th meeting between the two teams, with Cal State L.A.
holding a 30-28 advantage. Earlier this season Brandi McGinests
last second shot came up just short as the Toros dropped a
54-56 heartbreaker in the Torodome. The 58 meetings thus far
between the two teams is the most against any active opponent,
and ties former conference opponent UC Riverside (58 meetings)
for most all-time. |

Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners
(18-1, 11-1 CCAA)
About CSUB: The Roadrunners swept last weekends
series, beating Cal State San Bernardino 68-63 and UC San
Diego 80-72. CSUB is currently riding an 16-game winning
streak, with their last loss coming at the hands of UC San
Diego back on December 3rd, a 101-91 overtime decision.
Against Cal State San Bernardino it
appeared as though the Roadrunners may have been caught
looking ahead to the game vs UC San Diego, wanting to avenge
the only blemish on their record. The game came down to the
final 25 seconds, when a quartet of Roadrunners made a handful
of key plays to run the Bakersfield win streak to 15 games.
Rhondi Naff came off the bench to lead to the Roadrunners with
15 points. Rhonda Johnson would contribute her fifth
double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The following night, UC San Diego would
lead for most of the game's first nine minutes. When
Bakersfield finally gained the lead, it couldn't ignite one of
its trademark runs that has put away so many teams this
season. The teams took turns questioning each others
grip on the game until a Krista Arase three-pointer gave
Bakersfield the lead for good at 48-45. Although the
Roadrunners never relinquished their advantage, they couldn't
put UCSD away until the closing minutes. Bakersfield got the
lead to seven points three times down the stretch. It wasn't
until a pair of Arase free throws with 1:47 left that made the
score 73-64, allowing the Roadrunners to breathe easier.
Rivalry Info-CSUB: This will be the
13th meeting between the two teams, with Cal State Bakersfield
dominating the series 10-2. In the first meeting between the
two teams this season, the Roadrunners used a late charge and
capitalized on poor shooting down the stretch by the Toros to
come away with the 78-74 win in the Torodome. |

Last Weeks Recap
SSU Recap: Against SSU, Brittney Blankenship would record
her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 10
rebounds to in the Toros 56-33 win.
It took awhile for both teams to get going in
the first half, as the Toros would be the first to put up points
on the scoreboard at the 17:25 mark. Both teams would continue
their offensive woes over the next few minutes, with neither team
able to get into double digits through the first ten minutes of
play.
CSUDH would not waste time in the second half
putting points on the board, starting the half on a 14-1 run to go
up 35-14 at the 14:14 mark. The Toro lead would hover around 20
points over the next four minutes, before remaining above 20 for
the rest of the game. Michelle Kribell would contribute one of her
best games of the season with 10 points and eight rebounds.
CSUDH would keep on rolling the following night
as Tameka Blue and Blankenship shared top scoring honors with 15
points apiece in the 78-57 win, extending the Toro winning streak
to five games.
SFSU Recap: SFSU started quickly and
controlled the game over the first four minutes of play, building
a 7-4 lead. CSUDH would catch up on a jumper by Blue and tie the
game at 14-14 with 10:56 remaining. The Toros would go on a 13-0
run over the remaining 4:45 and go into the locker room with a
47-31 advantage.
SFSU would start the second half on a 16-7 run
over the first eight minutes of play to cut the Toro lead to seven
at 54-47. Aujanee Baldwin would come off the bench and grab an
offensive rebound, and then score to put the Toros' lead back in
double digits at 57-47 with 10:22 remaining. CSUDH would turn up
its defensive intensity, and keep the Gators scoreless for the
next five minutes, pushing their lead to 75-53. The Toros would
tack on three more points to complete the 78-57 win.
Alana Bailey would chip in her third
double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while
Jessica Liang contributed 11 points off the bench.
News, Notes, & Other Toro-Bits
TURNING THE TIDE: Through the first 13
games of the season the Toros have started games strong,
outscoring their opponents in the first half, 431 to 364. However,
the intermission always seemed to cast a spell over the Toro
offense, and the team that came out of the locker room was not the
same team that went in. In the second half the Toros
opponents would turn the tide, seeing CSUDH be outscored 422 to
451. However, during the Toros current five-game winning streak
they have reversed their fortunes and have won the battle of both
halves. CSUDH has outscored their opponents 173 to 120 in the
first half and 170 to 123 in the second, which have led to four
blowouts of at least 20 points.
DEFENSE...DEFENSE...DEFENSE: This
season CSUDH has been anchored by their ability to bring down
their opponents field goal percentage, 3-point field goal
percentage, and points per game. But during the current win streak
the Toros have turned their defense up to a new level. The Toros
have held the past five teams to a combined .274 field goal
percentage, .216 3-point field goal percentage, and an amazing
48.6 points per game. Currently the CSUDH defense is ranked #1 in
points allowed per game, opponent field goal percentage, and
opponent 3-point field goal percentage amongst conference teams.
LUCK OF THE FRESHMAN?: So far this
season the Toros have used five different starting lineups,
producing an overall record of 12-6. However, a strange fact is
that the Toros are undefeated when at least one freshman is in the
starting lineup, winning all five of their games. The Toros are
3-0 in the games when Aujanee Baldwin starts, and 2-0 when Ennisha
Kyles is in the starting five.
ROUGH ROAD AHEAD: The Toros are heading
out on a four-game road trip that could determine if they are to
make the playoffs for the second straight year. After they take on
the West Regions No. 5 ranked Cal State L.A. on Friday, it only
gets harder they take on the Wests No. 1 ranked Cal State
Bakersfield. The following week, the Toros play at Chico State,
who is currently ranked No. 4, before returning home to take on
Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego, who are ranked No. 10
and No. 2. All together CSUDH will play over half of the ranked
schools in the Western Region in the next three weeks.
