Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes (13-10, 7-9 CCAA)
About CSUSB: Cal State San Bernardino is coming off a split last week, first losing to UC San Diego, 96-68, then beating Cal State Monterey Bay convincingly, 70-43, ending their two-game losing streak. This season the Coyotes have never lost more than two games in a row, nor have they won more than three games in a row.

Against UCSD the Coyotes would hang tough in the first half, being down 31-43 at half time. The Coyotes would shoot 45 percent from the field while the host Tritons nailed 52 percent of their field goals in the first half. The difference-maker in the first period seemed to be the disparity in free throws, with the Tritons making 10 free throws to the Although the Coyotes would score more points in the second half (37), unfortunately so did UCSD (53), in handing the Coyotes the loss.

The next night against Cal State Monterey Bay the Coyotes would take out their frustrations , roaring to a 24-point halftime lead and coasting to a 70-43 victory over the Otters. Christina Day led the Coyotes with 19 points and six rebounds while Desirae Martinez had 15 points and six rebounds, with the two players hitting a combined seven of 11 from three-point range. The Coyotes made 23-of-53 field goals (43 %) and 17-of-28 (60%) from the foul line. The Coyotes forced 29 turnovers and made 17 steals in the game.

On the season the Coyotes are led by Day’s 12.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Rounding out their offense are Tamara Thomas and Monique Cruz, with 9.7 and 8.8 points per game, respectively.

Rivalry Info-CSUSB: This will be the 34th meeting between the two teams, with the Toros holding a 20-13 advantage. Earlier this season the Toros came away with the 60-52 win in San Bernardino, CA.

UC San Diego Tritons (19-4, 13-3 CCAA)
About UCSD: UC San Diego is coming off a 3-0 week, with conference wins over Cal State San Berarndino (96-68), Cal State Monterey Bay (92-53), and a non-conference win over Grand Canyon University (92-70).

Against CSUSB, the Tritons never trailed in the contest, scoring the first four points of the game before CSUSB tied it at four apiece with 17:33 remaining in the first half. From there the Tritons went on a 14-4 run and never led by less than eight points the rest of the way. Briana Hinga was one of four UCSD players to score in double figures, pouring in 12 points to go along with 12 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots. The two blocks give her 37 for the season, setting a new UCSD single-season record, eclipsing Lisa Beaver’s total of 36 from the 1991-92 season.

Leora Juster added a game-high 21 points while Hillary Hansen and Michelle Osier chipped in with 18 and 16 points, respectively.

Against the Otters, the Tritons would just keep on rolling, extending their winning streak to three, and 14 out of their last 16 games. Although the Tritons blew out the Otters, the game was marred by 54 fouls and 50 turnovers between the two teams.

Leora Juster led the Tritons with 18 points and six assists, while Hillary Hansen added a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Briana Hinga and Michelle Osier would round out the Tritons in double figures with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

On the season the Tritons are led by the CCAA’s leading scorer Leora Juster, who’s averaging 21.4 points per game. Michelle Osier and Hillary Hansen are the only other Tritons in double figures with 13.7 and 11.6 points per game, respectively. As a team UCSD is outscoring their opponents by 13 points a game, and is averaging seven more rebounds a game.

Last Week’s Recap

CSUC Recap: The Toros suffered a pair losses last week, first a 74-73 loss to Chico State, followed by an upset loss at Cal State Stanislaus, 88-80.

Against the Wildcats, the Toros would make a strong second half charge after being down 39-28 at the intermission. CSUDH would have possession with a one-point lead and six seconds remaining in the game, but the Toros would turn the ball over and then foul. Though Haley Ford would be sent to the line and miss both free throws, she would grab her own rebound and put the ball back up and in as time expired to rob the Toros of back-to-back upset victories over higher ranked opponents.

Tameka Blue would record her third straight 20-point performance in the effort, with 21 points, seven assists, five steals, and four rebounds. Brandi McGinest would be the only other Toro in double figures with 17 points.

CSUS Recap: The next night the Toros would come out strong in the first half, shooting 42 percent, while holding the Warriors to only 33 percent from the field to go into the locker room with a comfortable 42-33 lead.

In the second half the Warriors would turn the tables on the Toros, outscoring CSUDH 55-38, while shooting 50 percent from the floor.

McGinest would lead the charge and, for the second night in a row, have 17 points while also chipping in seven rebounds. Brittney Blankenship would contribute 16 points and six rebounds, while Alana Bailey was a rebound shy of a double-double, with 15 points and nine boards. Michelle Kribell would also be in double figures with 10 points and five rebounds.

News, Notes, & Other Toro-Bits

GOING OUT WITH A BANG: Up until last weekend senior transfer Brandi McGinest has remained relatively quiet. However, with her collegiate career just four games from its conclusion, the Long Beach native has decided to put an exclamation mark at the end instead of settling for a period. In last weekend's games, she scored 17 points in each contest, nearly 11 points over her season average of 8.6. She averaged 26 minutes on the weekend, six more minutes than her season average up until that point.

JUST GIVE ME MINUTES: Freshman Ennisha Kyles has be a constant figure off the bench this season, playing in 17 of 22 games while only playing more than 10 minutes six times. Given her limited play, she has almost always contributed. In her first collegiate game she played three minutes, scored three points, and grabbed two rebounds. Against Chico State she played 12 minutes, chipping in only one point, but grabbed four rebounds and one steal. And in the double-overtime upset against the top ranked team in the West, Cal State Bakersfield, Kyles played 10 minutes, scoring two points and pulling down four rebounds, two on the offensive end.

Although her numbers are modest at best, Kyles has shown the potential to be a significant contributor for not only the remaining games of this season, but also as a permanent fixture for the future of Toros basketball.

A TALE OF TWO HALVES, BY JESSICA LIANG: The resident sharp-shooter on the team this season is Jessica Liang, who is one of the top three-point shooters in the conference. However, most of Liang's production has been limited to only one half of play. Liang has scored a total of 180 points, with 113 of those points coming in the first half, which equals 63% of her total points.

If Liang was able to duplicate her first half production in the second half of play, her scoring average would jump from 8.2 ppg to 11.3 ppg, putting her in the top 20 in the conference.

A FINAL FAREWELL: This Saturday’s game against UC San Diego marks the last home game for two seniors, Tameka Blue and Brandi McGinest. Celeste Haueter and Adiana Vega-Howard are also finishing their careers.
