The Toros Online
Press Release

Toros Baseball Get Branded by Golden Eagles, Lose 14-1
February 23, 2006

Complete Box Score

Carson, CA - The Golden Eagles soared over the Toros quickly, scoring a combined five runs over the first three innings before exploding for seven runs in the 7th inning to hand CSUDH a 14-1 loss in the 2006 CCAA Conference season opener. With the loss, the Toros fall to 6-7, 0-1 CCAA, and No. 13 ranked Cal State L.A remains unbeaten at 7-0, 1-0 CCAA .

After recording the first out on three pitches, Toro starter Ryan Owen (Torrance, CA/West Torrance HS) would struggle, going to full counts on the next three batters, with the last hitting a two-run home run to right field.

The Golden Eagles would continue to press Owen in the next two innings, starting the 2nd inning with back-to-back singles, before grounding into a double play that would score the runner from third. In the 3rd, CSULA would push two more runs across the board, thanks in part to an error by the Toros.

The Toro offense that scored 28 runs last weekend was dormant against CSULA starter Kyle Owsley. In seven innings of work, Owsley would allow only four hits, one run, and issue no walks, while never giving up more than one hit in any inning.

In the top half of the 7th, CSULA would use a grand slam by Jacob Ferris as part of a seven run inning to put the game far out of reach.

CSUDH would be shut out until the bottom of the 7th, when former Golden Eagle Mateo Marquez (Biggs, CA/Cal State L.A.) took a 1-0 pitch and sent it over the right field wall for his second home run of the season.

Offensively for the Golden Eagles, Ferris would lead the team with three hits and eight RBIs, including two home runs. Adam Klein, Tommy Horning, and Randall Akasaka would all record two hits on the afternoon.

Martin Conde (Los Angeles, CA/Fremont HS) and Cody Puckett (Apple Valley, CA/Hesperia HS) would record extra base hits in the effort, with a double and a triple, respectively.

Owen would toss 5.2 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits while hurling over 100 pitches. Reliever Gustavo Hernandez (Lynwood, CA/Lynwood HS) would be perfect out of the bullpen, giving up no runs and no hits in 1.1 innings of work.

The Toros will next be in action tomorrow when they take on Cal State L.A., in game two of the four-game set, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Toro Field.
