Opponents Scouting Report

Entering the week, Dion Cook’s 15.2 and Jonathan Boyd’s 12.6 points per game averages pace CPP, while Larry Gordon’s 5.4 rebounds per contest leads the Bronco board members. CPP’s resident sharp-shooter, Boyd has converted on nearly 50% of his 3-point attempts as the Broncos are connecting for 49.7% of their field goals from the floor.

In the earlier meeting, the Toros used 22 points from Mario Malave en route to a 60.9% second-half shooting percentage to erase a five-point halftime deficit and stun the reigning co-CCAA Champions. Shamont Brown chipped in 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting while the Broncos converted just 2-of-8 foul shots in the three-point loss.

@ Cal State Monterey Bay (10-18, 7-11 CCAA, Sat., March 4, 7:30 p.m.): The Otters host CSUDH after blowing out Cal State L.A. by 20 before falling by three to Cal State Bakersfield last weekend.

This Week in Toros Basketball: The Toros conclude their regular season with two road games, taking on Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday, March 1, followed by the final game of the season at Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, March 4.

Toros Drop Two at Home: The Toros dropped a pair of contests in their final homestand last week, falling to Cal State San Bernardino, 76-67, on Friday night, before falling in overtime to UC San Diego, 80-77, the next night.

Against the Coyotes, junior Trevon Bryant established the CSUDH single-season block record at 38 with four rejections on the night, but the visitors used a 55.3% success rate from the field to take the nine-point win. Freshman Jonathan Toliver led all Toros with 15 points, while Mike Steed’s 14, Shamont Brown’s 12 and Carlos Rivers’ 11 points rounded out the double-figure scorers. Bryant tallied his fourth and record-setting block of the night against CSUSB’s James Perkins at the 2:44 mark of the second half to vault over former Toro great Anthony Blackmon, who set his record of 37 blocks during the 1988-89 campaign.

On Saturday, Rivers scored a career-high 31 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the field, but visiting UC San Diego enjoyed a 27-to-11 advantage at the charity stripe to spoil “Senior Night” in escaping with an 80-77 overtime win. Rivers connected on 5-of-6 from 3-point land and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe in a career performance, while Durwin Williams’ 16 points rounded out the Toros double-figure scorers.

The Only Way to Go is Up: With the Toros’ victory at Chico State on February 17, the Toros equaled their conference win total of from the 2005-06 campaign with six conference wins, and have two games left in the regular season to surpass that total.

Toros Amongst the CCAA’s Best: Here’s a quick look at how the Toros stack up against the rest of the CCAA, with games played through February 25:

  • Blocks - Trevon Bryant (1st, 2.05 bpg), Durwin Williams (18th, 0.48 bpg);
  • Assist/Turnover Ratio - Mike Steed (5th, 1.74), Carlos Rivers (12th, 1.10);
  • Steals - Carlos Rivers (6th, 1.42 spg), Mike Steed (7th, 1.41 spg);
  • FG% - Shamont Brown (7th, 53%), Carlos Rivers (14th, 47%);
  • Rebounds - Durwin Williams (8th, 6.0 rpg), Shamont Brown (10th, 5.7 rpg);
  • Scoring - Carlos Rivers (9th, 14.1 ppg); Shamont Brown (21th, 11.2 ppg);
  • Assists - Carlos Rivers (10th, 3.21 apg), Mike Steed (12th, 3.09 apg), Shamont Brown (13th, 2.96 apg);
  • 3-Pt. FG Made: Carlos Rivers (T11th, 1.62 pg), Jonathan Toliver (T20th, 1.38 pg).

Surpassing the Record Books: Junior transfer Trevon Bryant etched his name atop the CSUDH record books for blocks in a single-season last week, tallying his 38th block on Friday against Cal State San Bernardino. This season, Bryant has collected 41 blocks, good for an average of 2.05, which leads the CCAA, and ranks 29th in the NCAA (as of 2/18). In fact, Bryant’s nearest competitor in the blocks per game category is 0.87 blocks below, currently sitting at 1.18 bpg.

On Friday, Bryant surpassed former Toro great Anthony Blackmon, who set the record of 37 blocks in a single season during the 1988-89 campaign.

What a Difference a Start Makes: Shamont Brown has come on strong as the season has progressed, earning a starting nod in the Toros’ past 22 games. In those contests, the 6’4” junior has established himself as a legitimate scoring threat, notching double-digits in 13 of those contests while averaging 12.4 points during that stretch. Additionally, he has pulled down an average of 5.7 boards per contest, raising his season average on the glass to 5.7 per game.

On the season, Brown has tallied highs of 23 points and 12 boards, with the 23-point performance occurring at Cal State L.A. on February 10, shooting for 54% from the field in that contest.

Rebound Central: After six games of being out-rebounded by 38 boards to start the season, the Toros’ hard work is paying off on the glass. During the first six games, CSUDH had out-rebounded its opponents in only two games, each by one board, while tying in the rebound category one time. Alarmingly, in the three other contests in which CSUDH was out-rebounded, the Toros were bested by eight boards in one contest, and by 14 and 18 in the other two.

However, CSUDH has taken charge of the boardroom in its past 19 contests, collecting a total of 87 more boards than their opponents to give CSUDH an overall rebounding edge for the year (33.2 to 30.8). In fact, the Toros have enjoyed four games in which they have out-rebounded opponents by at least 10 boards, including +11 against Cal Poly Pomona, +13 against Chaminade, +15 at Chico State and +33 against Dominican

Hard to Guard: Junior point guard Carlos Rivers has been one of the main “go-to” players on the Toros squad this season. After scoring a total of 15 points in his first two contests in Cardinal & Gold, Rivers has reached double-figure scoring in 15 of the last 22 games, including seven 20+ point performances and a career-best 31-point outburst against UC San Diego last Saturday. Rivers also has provided solid work at the charity stripe, connecting on 87% of his free throws on the season.

His Case is Made: After seeing action in two games off the bench to begin the 2005-06 campaign, Durwin Williams has started 16 of the Toros’ last 24 contests, including the last 12 games, and the Compton native has not disappointed. In those 16 starts, the 6’7” forward has averaged 10.3 points per game on 60-of-111 shooting from the field (54%), including nine makes from behind the 3-point arc. Additionally, Williams has been solid from the line, sinking 35-of-46 from the charity stripe, and steady on the boards, tallying 6.6 rebounds per game as a starter, tops on the team in those 16 contests.

On the season, Williams is averaging 9.2 points and 6.0 boards per game, including a season-high 14 rebounds in the Toros’ 77-68 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on January 27.

A Work in Progress: Continuing the strong offensive effort that began 2006, CSUDH has maintained its solid production on the offensive end as it concludes its regular season this week at Cal Poly Pomona and at Cal State Monterey Bay. The Toros are shooting 48.7% from the field and boast six players whose percentages from the floor are at least 45%: Trevon Bryant (58%), Durwin Williams (54%), Shamont Brown (53%), Mike Steed (48%), Carlos Rivers (47%) and Nonso Nibo (47%).

Thank You. No, Thank You: If there’s one glaring stat in the Toros 7-7 home record compared to their 2-7 road record, it’s the different in assists and turnovers. At home, CSUDH is enjoying a +50 in that category (240 assists / 190 turnovers) while suffering a -47 differential on the road (105 assists / 152 turnovers).
