Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (11-14, 8-10
CCAA)
About CPP: Cal Poly Pomona is coming off a split last
week, first losing 70-50 to UC San Diego, before pounding Cal
State San Bernardino 72-44.
In the loss against the Tritons, Shanika
Perkins would lead the offense with 18 points, while DeJa
Blevins added a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
In the game, it would be a tale of two
halves for the Broncos, as they were outscored in the first
half 38-19, but would rally after the intermission, only being
outscored by one, at 32-31.
The following night against the Coyotes the
Broncos Ashley Moody would be the spark off the bench,
scoring 11 points in only 16 minutes of play. Blevins would
again garner team-high scoring honors with 19 points, while
Porsche Kirksey pulled down 12 rebounds.
For the second night in a row the Broncos
would use the first half as a warm-up before heating up the
second half. CPP would explode in the second half, scoring 47
points while shooting 80% from the field.
On the season CPP is led by three players
in double figures, Belvins, Perkins, and Moody with 12.2,
11.8, and 10.5 points, respectively. The trio has accounted
for just over 47% of the Bronco offense. As the team the
Broncos have been tough on the boards, averaging five more
rebounds a game, and have pulled down 114 more offensive
boards than their opponents.
Rivalry Info-CPP: This will be the
61st meeting between the two teams, with Pomona dominating the
series, 51-9. Earlier this season the Toros handed the Broncos
a 73-51 loss in the Torodome. |

Cal State Monterey Bay Otters (3-22,
2-16 CCAA)
About CSUMB: Cal State Monterey Bay was swept last
week, first losing to Cal State L.A., 92-77, followed by an
88-51 decision against Cal State Bakersfield. With those two
losses, the Otters have dropped seven in a row, and 14 of
their last 15.
Against the Golden Eagles the Otters were
led by pair of strong individual performances. Jennifer Lopez
would tie for game high scoring honors with 23 points, while
shooting 10-for-14 from the field. Britnea Moore would drop 16
points, going 10-for-15 from the charity stripe.
The following night against the
Roadrunners, Moore would be the only player in double figures
with 12 points. Natalie Franka narrowly missed out on a
double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
On the season Lopez is the only Otter
averaging double figures with 10.1 points and 2.5 steals a
game. The Otters have struggled mightily in their second
season in the highly competitive CCAA, being outscored by 19
points per game. Turnovers have been a major problem as well
for the Otters, as CSUMB had turned the ball over 669 times
versus their opponents 529 miscues.
Rivalry Info-CSUMB: This will be
the 4th meeting between the two teams, with the Toros
undefeated against the Otters, winning all three games thus
far. In their first meeting this season the Toros beat the
Otters 76-50 in the Torodome. |

CSUSB Recap: The Toros were feeling
Blue in more ways than one after dropping both
games last weekend, as senior Tameka Blue played her final
games in the Torodome, and dropped a combined 46 points in her
goodbye performance to the Toro fans who have cheered her one
during her record setting four-year career.
Against Cal State San Bernardino the Toros
second-half struggles did them in, as they dropped a 71-63
overtime decision, despite Blue recording her first
double-double of the season with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Aujanee Baldwin would chip in eight points
in the effort while Michelle Kribell pulled down seven boards.
-
UCSD Recap: The following night
against UC San Diego, Blue led the Toros with 22 points, seven
assists, and four rebounds in the last home game of her record
setting career, but the Tritons used a trio of players in
double figures to come away with the 68-56 win, completing the
season sweep.
Alana Bailey would contribute eight points
and four rebounds, Ennisha Kyles would chip in six points and
nine rebounds, while Adiana Vega-Howard closed out her
three-year Toro career with an exclamation point, coming off
the bench and nailing a trey.
News, Notes, & Other Toro-Bits
GIVING IT ALL SHES GOT: Currently,
the Toros are on a four-game skid and most likely will not make
the playoffs. However, senior Tameka Blue is giving it all shes
got at the end of the 2005-06 season. After falling off pace to
become the all-time leading scorer in CSUDH history last month,
Blue has stormed back with a vengeance, scoring 20 or more points
in five of her last six games to put herself ahead of the pace
needed to become the all-time scoring leader in CSUDH history.
BLUE vs. HAGAN: Faye Hagan was widely
regarded as the best womens basketball player in CSUDH
history. However, with Blue only 33 points away from tying Hagan
for most points scored in a career, it is a close call as to who
will get the title as the best Toros womens basketball
player ever.
Hagan scored 1,466 points in only three years
in a Toro uniform while setting season records for scoring
average, free throws made, free throws attempted, and steals, and
career records for scoring average, free throws attempted, field
goals made and field goals attempted. Blue, on the other hand, has
scored 1,433 points in four years in a Toro uniform, while setting
game records for free throws made, free throws attempted, tying
the game record for assists, and establishing career records for
assists, free throw percentage, and free throws made.
An interesting fact in trying to decide between
the two is that while Hagan scored all of her points in three
years compared to Blues four seasons, Blue as taken 690 less
field goal attempts along with 63 less free throws attempts.
Overall, Hagan shot 29% from the field and 67%
from the line, while Blue has shot 37% from the field and 80% from
the line, giving Blue the hold as a better shooter.
TWO TO BUILD ON: Among all of the new
faces two freshmen have stood out this season. Aujanee Baldwin and
Ennisha Klyes have popped up in the starting line-up at the end of
the season, and as their minutes have increased so have their
productions. Neither is a bonafide star yet, but given their
limited play and the growth each of them has shown over the course
of the season, the Toro future is bright with these two in the
line-up.
Baldwin has shown very good foot speed on
defense, allowing her to be one of the most tenacious defenders on
the Toro roster. Offensively, Baldwin has been able to use her
speed to get the basket, and has shown some jump-shooting ability.
In only her first year in the Cardinal and Gold, Baldwin looks
very similar to former Toro Octavia Askew.
Klyes, on the other hand, took a while to show
what she was capable of. Through most of the season she showed
athleticism, coupled with a bit of timidness in her game. However
in the past few weeks, that timidness has disappeared. Kyles has
been consistently banging with the bigs down low, and has shown
impressive moves with her back to the basket.
The future is always unknown, but with these
two young talents, along with a group of sophomores maturing into
juniors, the Toros should be in good hands.
