San Francisco, Calif.--- The 15th ranked San
Francisco State University Gators swept a California Collegiate
Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader from the second ranked
Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (19-3, 4-2 CCAA) 2-0 and 5-0
Sunday afternoon at SF States Softball Field. With the
sweep, the Gators (16-8, 5-5 CCAA) snap the Toros ten-game
winning streak and also moved back to 500 in the CCAA.
The sweep was keyed by the pitcher of SF State
senior Sonja Garnett who pitched two complete game shutouts while
striking out 15 and walking just one in 14 innings of work to
improve to 12-3 on the season. She also allowed 10 hits in the two
games and stranded 13 Toros on the base paths.
The first game was knotted at 0-0 in the second
inning with two outs when Mary Cunnie hit her first career home
run to left field to give Garnett all the runs that she needed. SF
State added an insurance run in the sixth inning on an one-out RBI
single to left field by Kristin Bartholomay that scored Amanda
Meyer.
Garnett finished game one pitching her eighth
complete game shutout of the season while striking out a season
high 11 batters and walking none. She gave up six hits by the
Toros, but stranded nine Cal State Dominguez Hills runners
on base. The Gators had four hits themselves off of Toro starter
Jackie Miller (7-2) who pitched a complete game while striking out
9 and walking one. She gave up four hits and two runs.
In the night cap, the score again was tied at
0-0 when the Gators scored first in the fourth inning on a two-out
RBI single to left field by Carrie Arth that scored Lauren Dowell.
SF State broke open the game with a four-run
fifth inning capped by Cunnies two-out two-run single up the
middle that scored Meyer and Jordanna Freemer.The Gators had seven
hits in game two with Arth and Nicole Hartfield each with two.
Garnett went the distance for the 15th time
this season while striking out four and walking one. She gave up
four hits in her 9th complete game shutout of the season while
stranding four Toros on base.
Amy Thomas (6-1) picked up the loss while also
pitching a complete game and striking out six and walking none.
The Toros will continue their northern swing
and stop at Sonoma State on Monday afternoon for a pair of games.
