LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No.10 Cal State
Dominguez Hills softball team swept UC San Diego in a doubleheader
for the second time this season, with the Toros winning by scores
of 4-0 and 7-1. The games were played Saturday afternoon at Triton
Softball Field on the UCSD campus.
The Toros, who swept the five-game season
series between the two teams, improve to 32-6 overall and 11-4 in
the conference. With the losses the Tritons fall to 20-20 overall
and 8-10 in CCAA play.
After a scoreless first inning, the Toros got
on the board in the top of the second inning after a Linda Reyes
home-run and picked up two more in the top of the third following
a Jennifer Wilson single to left-center.
The Tritons had their best chance to answer in
the bottom of the fourth with runners on second and third with one
out, but Dallas Hernandez and Jenny Maze struck out swinging to
end the threat. UCSD would get another opportunity in the bottom
of the sixth with one out and runners on first and third, but two
fly balls towards second base ended any comeback hopes.
Jackie Miller improved to 11-2 on the season
after allowing only three hits and striking out six in a complete
game shutout for the Toros. Melissa Ward fell to fell to 13-8 on
the year giving up 10 hits and four runs in her own complete game
performance. Ward was successful in holding reigning CCAA Player
of the Year Cindy Perry-Brown to one hit in four at-bats.
In game two, the Tritons gave up one run early
in the top of the first, but responded in the bottom of the
second, tying the game with an RBI double by Jenny Maze. After
starting pitcher Lauren Chastain had back-to-back strikeouts to
end a scoring threat, stranding two runners in the top of the
third, the Toros responded in the fourth. Capitalizing on two
Triton errors, Dominguez Hills scored five runs on four hits to
blow the game wide open.
The Tritons could only muster two hits the rest
of the way, as the Toros tacked on another run in the fifth and
cruised to victory.
Nicole Fullerton threw two scoreless innings of
relief for the Tritons, allowing only three hits while walking one
and striking out one in her time in the circle. Jenny Spencer
accounted for two of the six UCSD hits in her three at-bats.
Amy Thomas improved to 9-4 on the year for the
Toros after allowing only one run on six hits, with no walks and
four strikeouts. Lori Moreno and Natalie Greco led the way for the
Toros on the offensive end, as Moreno had three RBIs and Greco
collected three hits and scored twice.
The Toros take the field again next Friday when
the team hosts Cal State Monterey Bay. First pitch for the
doubleheader is 1:00 p.m. |
