POMONA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills
(29-16, 18-10) wrapped up a spot in the four-team CCAA Baseball
Championship Tournament -- the first team to do so -- with a 17-6,
19-hit win at Cal Poly Pomona's Scolinos Field Friday afternoon.
Martin Conde, who hit the big go-ahead home run
in Thursdays Cal State Dominguez Hills win, had three more
hits and three RBI on Friday. Jason Klug had two hits and three
RBI, while Isidro Perez had three hits, scored three runs and
drove in two.
The Toros onslaught made things easier
for starter Ryan Owen, who scattered 10 hits and allowed four
earned runs before coming out of the game in the seventh. James
Dodson, Sean Sivers and Dustin Gober finished up for the Toros and
allowed only one hit.
Cal Poly Pomona starter Ryan Screnar (Fr.,
Claremont, Claremont HS) went five innings for the Broncos and
gave up eight hits and four earned runs. The Toros broke the game
open with three runs in the sixth, five in the seventh and two
more in the ninth.
Chase Stroupe (Sr., San Clemente, San Clemente
HS) had three hits and scored two runs for the Broncos, while
Anthony Esquer (Sr., Chino Hills, Whittier Christian HS) had two
hits and two RBI.
The Toros jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three
innings. Klugs double down the left-field line drove in
Houston Hernandez and Kyle Stanley in the first inning and
Hernandez reached on a fielders choice to drive in a run in
the second. The Toros scored three more times in the third on a
three-run single into the right-centerfield gap by Conde on a
two-out play with the runners going with the pitch.
Marc Evans (Jr., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS)
doubled to lead off the fourth inning and scored on a sacrifice
fly by John Daniels (So., Rancho Cucamonga, Rancho Cucamonga HS)
to make it 6-1 in the fourth, but the Toros got one back in the
fifth on a sacrifice fly by Chris Hunter.
Cal Poly Pomona got two runs in the fifth on a
run-scoring single by Esquer and a wild pitch that allowed Stroupe
to score.
The Toros, though, broke the game open in their
next two at bats. Mateo Marquez had a two-run single to highlight
a three-run sixth inning and Fred Medina, Stanley, Klug and Isidro
Perez drove in runs to highlight a five-run seventh inning.
Cal Poly Pomona (20-29, 15-18) was eliminated
from tournament consideration on Thursday by the Toros, who lead
the CCAA by one game over Cal State L.A. with two games left. The
Broncos and Toros conclude their four-game series with a
doubleheader on Saturday at Carson beginning at noon. |
