TURLOCK, Calif. The No. 14 Cal State
Dominguez Hills softball team swept a pair of games over Cal State
Stanislaus, 8-0 in six innings in the first game and 7-5 in the
second, in CCAA action at Warrior Field Friday afternoon.
The Warriors fall to 31-20 overall and 14-12 in
the CCAA, while the Toros improve their mark to 42-9 and 21-7 in
conference play to close out their regular season.
In game one it was the Lori Moreno hitting a
bases-loaded triple in the second to give the Toros an early 3-0
lead.
In the fifth the Toros tacked on two more with
RBI-singles from Jackie Miller and Natalie Greco and the final
runs came with RBI-singles from Greco and Araceli Martinez in the
sixth.
Miller took the win to improve to 16-3 allowing
just one hit and fanning seven. Amanda Cantu took the loss, going
5 1/3 innings and allowing all seven runs on nine hits to drop to
12-4.
In the late game, the Warriors kept it closer
and had the winning run on first base with two out in the bottom
of the seventh before the side was retired.
Down 7-4 in the inning, Suzanne Burolla was hit
by a pitch to lead off the inning, followed by a Sarah Shamblin
single and a walk to Alyssa Guzman to load the bases. With one
out, Roberta Argot drove in one run. Then a deep fly by Megan Law
to center was not enough to score the runner from third, giving
the team the bases loaded and two outs before the final batter
struck out to end the rally.
Dominguez Hills opened the game with a two-run
first, but Argott tied the score with a two-run double in the
Warriors half of the inning.
Three more Toro runs would cross the plate in
the third inning and Stanislaus added two in the third on a single
up the middle by Law to make it 5-4. The Toros added the insurance
runs in the seventh.
Amy Thomas hurled 5.0 innings to take the win
and improve to 12-5, while Miller threw one inning of relief to
pick up her first save of the season. Jessica Gaumnitz went the
distance allowing the seven runs on 10 hits to drop to 10-7
overall.
