Huntington Beach, CA -- As the early morning
drizzle gave way to glorious sunshine and warmer weather, a sold
out contingent of 144 golfers made winners of present and future
Cal State Dominguez Hills student-athletes at the 16th Annual
Toros Scholarship Golf Classic held last Friday, June 9, at the
regal Meadowlark Golf Club in Huntington Beach, California.
This was our most successful
fund-raising event ever, began CSUDH Athletics Director
Patrick Guillen. We sold out our event for the first time in
the tournaments history, were treated to a great golf course
and venue by Meadowlark, and had the support and commitment of our
sponsors, community leaders, University and staff, evidenced by
both our auction item donations as well as the capacity-filled
ballroom. I couldnt have been happier.
The Toros Scholarship Golf Classic, which
serves as the major fund-raiser for the Toros athletics program,
featured Jim Dear, Mayor, City of Carson, as its Honorary
Chairman, who welcomed the hungry golfers as they settled into
their seats for the early afternoon buffet lunch. This years
event also featured a first in the Golf Classics history, a
JetBlue Hole-In-One Challenge giving golfers four opportunities
for four great JetBlue golfing vacation packages.
After the mornings best-ball scramble
concluded, participants were treated to a buffet lunch, mixed in
between the silent and live auctions. As the participants made
their way around the packed ballroom to peruse the donations,
silent auction items such as Tee for Two at Trump National Golf
Club, opportunities to Spend the Day With Dr. J and to
accompany the mens basketball team at a Las Vegas tournament
next season, autographed sports memorabilia by Los Angeles Dodger
Nomar Garciaparra, Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May and legendary
Jack Nicklaus, and assorted golf items were the first to go, while
bidding for Comedy and Magic Club VIP packages, weekend getaways
to Seattles The Rainier Club, San Francisco and the Desert
Hot Springs, as well as a collectors FELT Racing Bike - F80
all came down to the final seconds between multiple enthusiasts.
In between the silent auction sections, CSUDH
baseball assistant coach and designated auctioneer Murphy Sua
entertained the house during the live auction portion of the
afternoon, as Dodger Heaven, Club 33 and Blimp
Ride items all became hot commodities towards the events
conclusion.
After the mornings competition, the team
of Dennis Richards, Ray Oaks, Corby Dodge and Brian Woods took
home top honors with a 56, winning the tie-breaker over the
runner-up team of Andy Andrews, Larry Clark, Paul Lezatin and Ed
Medina, sponsored by Conoco Phillips. Rounding out the top three,
also via tie-breaker, was the J&L foursome (59) of Randy
Chang, Mark Iwikiri, Bob Black and Peter Guillen.
For us to have a new location
and a sold-out contingent -- actually we were oversold at 152
golfers -- and for everything to go as smoothly as it did, we
couldnt have asked for anything more, beamed Lamel D.
Harris, CSUDH Assistant Athletics Director and Golf Classic
Co-Chair. As co-chair, my biggest reward was feeling the
energy of the packed banquet room that was the result of all the
months of hard work leading up to the event by not only our Golf
Classic committee, but by our CSUDH Athletics staff and our campus
community who all went above and beyond to make it a huge success.
