Walnut Creek, CA -- On the heels of its 2005
NCAA Far West Region Title, the Cal State Dominguez Hills mens
soccer team was the top choice to win the South Division. The
Toros earned 8 of the possible 12 first-place votes in a preseason
poll of the CCAA head coaches, one year removed from a 17-5-2
overall and 9-3-2 finish in the CCAA.
Defending conference champion Sonoma State was
picked to repeat as the CCAA champions in 2006 after the Seawolves
received seven votes, while 10 of 12 coaches predicted SSU would
finish first in the North Division.
The other two teams picked to join SSU and
CSUDH in the CCAA Mens Soccer Championship on October 26-29
are UC San Diego and Cal State L.A.
On the womens side, the Toros were picked
to finish 2nd in the conferences South Division behind
defending CCAA champion UC San Diego, which received eight
first-place votes compared to the Toros three in the South.
The Tritons also received eight votes to win the conference
championship while CSUDH received two of the remaining three nods.
Chico State was the top pick to win the North
Division as the Wildcats earned nine first-place votes, with
Sonoma State completing the field of four teams that CCAA head
coaches predicted would compete in the CCAA Womens Soccer
Championships on October 26-29.
The Toros kicked off their 2006 season in the
great northwest yesterday, with the men taking a 1-0 win and the
women falling 2-0 at Western Washington. CSUDH battles national
power Seattle Pacific tomorrow, before concluding their Washington
trip against Seattle University on Thursday, August 31.
CSUDH hosts Grand Canyon University in its 2006
season home opener on Tuesday, September 5, with first kick for
the women at 4:30 p.m., followed by the mens contest at 7:00
p.m. in Toro Stadium, with the latter contest being web casted on
www.toroslive.com.
