Reigning Far West Champion Toros Picked to Win CCAA’s South Division in Coaches Preseason Men’s Soccer Poll
CSUDH women chosen as South Division runner-up finishers
August 28, 2006

Walnut Creek, CA -- On the heels of its 2005 NCAA Far West Region Title, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team was the top choice to win the South Division. The Toros earned 8 of the possible 12 first-place votes in a preseason poll of the CCAA head coaches, one year removed from a 17-5-2 overall and 9-3-2 finish in the CCAA.

Defending conference champion Sonoma State was picked to repeat as the CCAA champions in 2006 after the Seawolves received seven votes, while 10 of 12 coaches predicted SSU would finish first in the North Division.

The other two teams picked to join SSU and CSUDH in the CCAA Men’s Soccer Championship on October 26-29 are UC San Diego and Cal State L.A.

On the women’s side, the Toros were picked to finish 2nd in the conference’s South Division behind defending CCAA champion UC San Diego, which received eight first-place votes compared to the Toros’ three in the South. The Tritons also received eight votes to win the conference championship while CSUDH received two of the remaining three nods.

Chico State was the top pick to win the North Division as the Wildcats earned nine first-place votes, with Sonoma State completing the field of four teams that CCAA head coaches predicted would compete in the CCAA Women’s Soccer Championships on October 26-29.

The Toros kicked off their 2006 season in the great northwest yesterday, with the men taking a 1-0 win and the women falling 2-0 at Western Washington. CSUDH battles national power Seattle Pacific tomorrow, before concluding their Washington trip against Seattle University on Thursday, August 31.

CSUDH hosts Grand Canyon University in its 2006 season home opener on Tuesday, September 5, with first kick for the women at 4:30 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 7:00 p.m. in Toro Stadium, with the latter contest being web casted on www.toroslive.com.
