September 2, 2006

Complete Box Score

LOS ANGELES – In CCAA volleyball action, Cal State L.A. recorded a 30-16, 30-20, 30-24 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday night in the Eagles Nest. The Golden Eagles improve to 5-2, 1-1 CCAA, as the Toros fall to 3-5, 0-2.

Alexandra Meuter paced the Golden Eagles hitting .583 with seven kills, 12 total attacks, and recording 29 assists. Defensively, Kha Tara Steen had five assisted blocks in just two games of action, while Airess Padda assisted in four over the span of three games.

Game one saw the Golden Eagles pull out to an early 5-0 lead. The Toros were able to reduce the margin to just one point before Cal State L.A. went on to win 12 of the next 13 points, including an amazing run of nine consecutive points. With the Golden Eagles leading 23-11, the Toros took a timeout in an effort to regroup. In the end, Cal State L.A. proved to be too dominant for Cal State Dominguez Hills, as the Golden Eagles took the first game, 30-16.

The Golden Eagles dominated game two, hitting .379 as a team, to the Toros’ .107. A Cal State Dominguez Hills service error late in the game put the Golden Eagles up, 26-15. The Toros would go on to win six of the next seven points, but would still be unable to catch the Golden Eagles as Cal State L.A. won game two, 30-20.

After facing a 4-10 deficit, the Golden Eagles, much like UC San Diego the night before, looked as if a sweep was not in store. However, Cal State L.A. battled back to tie the game up at 12-12 before taking the lead and never looking back. Bianca Goropse contributed five kills to the winning effort, and Alexandra Meuter had three of her seven. Kha Tara Steen clinched the Golden Eagle victory with a Keslie Brown-assited kill. Cal State L.A. completed the sweep, 30-24.

The Toros have a two-night homestand next weekend, when Chico State comes to the Torodome for a Friday night match. Saturday night Cal State Stanislaus provides the opposition. Both begin at the usual 7:00 p.m. starting time.
