Warriors Rumble Past Toros in 3-1 CCAA Volleyball Win
More records 13 kills and a .364 hitting percentage in loss
September 9, 2006

Complete Box Score

Carson CA – CSUDH came out swinging and convincingly took game one in the battle of the last two remaining winless schools in CCAA volleyball action, but visiting Cal State Stanislaus would battle back and take the next three games in the 19-30, 30-28, 30-21, 30-28 win.

With the loss, the Toros fall to 3-7, 0-4 CCAA while Cal State Stanislaus improves to 3-6, 1-3 CCAA.

The two teams would start slow in game one, matching each other’s points and tying six times, with the final tie coming at 12-12. Sophia Lopes (Los Angeles, CA/Santa Monica City College) would shatter the knot with a cross court blast to give CSUDH the lead at 13-12.

The Toros would turn up the heat thereafter, using service aces by

Kayleigh Spratt (Rohnert Part, CA/Rancho Cotate HS), Lopes, and Maria Miranda (Lakewood, CA/Cerritos CC), and three kills apiece by Randi Johnson (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA/Campbell University) and Dennis Herrera (El Monte, CA/ELAC) down the stretch to put away the Warriors 30-19.

CSUS would come out like Warriors in game two, and lead from point one to 30. In that game, CSUS would find its offense, improving from a -.025 hitting percentage in game one to a .224 percentage.

Game three would only get better for fighting Warriors, as they improved their hitting percentage to .333 in the game, and overcome an early Toro lead.

Game four would be tight the entire way, with tie scores on eight different occasions. CSUS would take the lead on a Toro service error, and extend it on a Toro attacking error and a kill by Debbie Vander Schaaf. The Warriors would try to slip away from CSUDH, extending their lead to 27-23 on another Toro attacking error, but CSUDH would not lose its focus facing an increasing Warrior lead. Miranda would score a kill from the back row, followed by back-to-back attacking errors by the Warriors to bring CSUDH with in one at 26-27.

The teams would trade side outs over the next few plays, and CSUDH would knot the game at 28-28 on an ace by Miranda. However, Karly Van Foeken would pound the ball for kill 10 of the night, and the Toros would follow with an attack error to give the Warriors the 30-28 win, and their first CCAA victory of the year.

The Warriors would be led by Katie Hoag with a match-high 18 kills, while setter Kayla Van Duyn would chip in a double-double with 41 assists and 17 digs.

For CSUDH, Lopes and Timary More (Torrance, CA/El Camino CC) would each be in double figures with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Herrera would make the most of her extended playing time, chipping in eight kills, eight digs, and four serves aces.

At the net, Johnson would add six kills and a match-high eight block assists, the latter placing her in a tie for 3rd in the Toros’ all-time single game block assists record book. Miranda would contribute a match-high 22 digs in the effort.

The Toros will next be in action on Friday, September 15, for game one of a four-game road trip when they travel to Cal Poly Pomona, before returning home on Friday, September 29 to take on Humboldt State University, with first serve scheduled for 7:00 pm in the Torodome.
