McDonald's Hat Trick Highlights Scoring Surge in 7-1 Win Over Coyotes
September 10, 2006

Complete Box Score

Carson, CA -- Senior Rachele McDonald (Ventura, CA/Buena HS) scored three goals to lead a scoring outburst as the Toros dominated play in a convincing 7-1 win over visiting Cal State San Bernardino. Their record runs to 2-4, 1-1 CCAA, while the Coyotes fell to 1-3, 0-2 CCAA in a conference match-up.

McDonald started her scoring early, taking a dropped ball from CSUSB goalie Shawna-Rei Kam and depositing it into the back of the net just 1:33 into the contest. After the Coyotes equalized on an Ashley Salas header seven minutes later, the Toros took over, scoring the final six goals of the game.

Corrie Hirokawa (Torrance, CA/North Torrance HS) gave the Toros a 2-1 lead at 13:36, blasting her shot top shelf on an indirect free kick, after which Jackie Chavez (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA/Peninsula HS) made it 3-1 just three minutes later off a McDonald assist.

McDonald connected for her second goal at 35:40, pivoting around a Coyote defender and lofting her shot over new CSUSB keeper Laura Lyons from 13 yards out, and completed the hat trick at 63:51, a left-footed bender that eluded a leaping Lyons far post.

After entering the game at the 77:07 mark, senior Natalie Taracena (Downey, CA/Warren HS) saw her first action of 2006 and made the most of her playing time, lobbing a floater from 18 yards out at 78:44 that hit paydirt, giving the Downey native the first Toro goal of her career.

Not to be outdone, Nikki Vasquez (Chatsworth, CA/Pierce College) was "Nikki on the spot" at 88:27, tapping in the Toros' final goal after a Sandy Lloyd (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley HS) serve from midfield was bobbled and dropped by Lyons.

The Toros out-shot CSUSB 19-10 and enjoyed a 7-3 advantage in corners. CSUDH keeper Ashley De Alejandro (Lakewood, CA/LBCC) made one save in the game, while the Coyote keepers combined for two saves in the Toro win.

CSUDH travels to UC San Diego on September 12 for the first of five-consecutive contests away from Toro Stadium, before returning home on Friday, September 29, to host Humboldt State for a 4:30 p.m. first kick.
