Hearn’s Loft Earns Toros 2-1 Overtime Win Over Sonoma State
October 1, 2006

Complete Box Score

Carson, CA -- Senior Candace Hearn’s (Whittier, CA/Whittier HS) miracle loft with 1:03 left in overtime lifted Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 2-1 overtime win over visiting Sonoma State, extending CSUDH’s unbeaten streak to five-consecutive games and improving the Toros to 6-6-1, 5-3-1 CCAA. SSU, meanwhile, falls to 8-5-0, 6-3-0 CCAA.

Coming off the double overtime draw against Humboldt State two days ago, CSUDH wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as senior Rachele McDonald (Ventura, CA/Buena HS) took a feed from Sandy Lloyd (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley HS), and crossed to the feet of Jackie Chavez (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA/Peninsula HS), who beat SSU keeper Carissa Amiral near post for a quick 1-0 lead at the 13:44 mark.

That’s where the score remained until Seawolf Tracy Webster equalized at 49:50, taking a through ball and beating CSUDH keeper Ashley De Alejandro (Lakewood, CA/LBCC) far post.

Both sides had chances to take the lead in regulation with SSU’s best chance coming in the 65th minute on a breakaway. De Alejandro, however, broke from her line and deflected the ball at about 30 yards to keep the game tied. CSUDH had its best chances late in regulation, but a Monique Castro (San Diego, CA/Mira Mesa HS) rocket from 30 yards away hit the crossbar, and a Kristen Boskovich (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA/Peninsula HS) header with under a minute left was saved by a diving Amiral.

CSUDH continued to pepper the Seawolf defense in the extra session as it tallied eight shots to SSU’s none, with the final attempt coming from the foot of Hearn, who lofted her shot from the 18-yard corner towards the far post, where it somehow found its way over Amiral’s outstretched arms for the game-winner.

The Toros out-shot SSU 31-8, the second-consecutive game CSUDH has managed 31 shots, although Sonoma State enjoyed a 7-5 advantage in corners. Seawolf keeper Amiral notched 15 saves in net, while De Alejandro tallied four saves in the win.

The Toros continue CCAA play at home as they host southern California nemesis UC San Diego on Wednesday, October 4, in a primetime match-up with first kick scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Toro Stadium.
