POMONA Cal State Dominguez Hills
and Cal Poly Pomona had to settle for a 0-0 tie Sunday in a men's
soccer match at Kellogg Field. Cal Poly Pomona (7-5-3, 5-4-3)
remains in fourth place in the CCAA South Division, but is just
one point behind Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-5-1, 6-5-1) and
three points behind first-place Cal State L.A.
Cal Poly Pomona is bidding for its first
winning season since 1999 and its first appearance in the
four-team CCAA Championship Tournament since 1998. The Broncos are
just two points out of the fourth spot with four matches
remaining.
Both goaltenders played well while recording
shutouts. Thomas Ryan made seven saves for the Broncos to post his
second straight shutout, while Kyle Polak didnt need to make
a save to record his eighth shutout of the year. Polak, did,
though, come out aggressively and snagged several dangerous Cal
Poly Pomona crosses in traffic near the goal mouth.
The Toros held a 14-6 advantage in shots,
including a 6-1 edge in the second half when they began dominating
play for large stretches of time. The Broncos had a pair of good
chances in the first overtime period and the Toros had four corner
kicks and two solid attempts in the second overtime period.
Cal State Dominguez Hills had 13 corner kicks
in the game to five for the Broncos.
The Broncos had the best scoring chance in the
first half when Tadd Dolfo blistered a shot from inside the box
just over the crossbar. Later in the half, Cal State Dominguez
Hills forward Julio Madrigal took a shot that sailed just wide of
the goal from point blank range.
The Toros had the better of play in the second
half and almost had the game-winner with 13:40 left in regulation,
but a shot by Wilmer Lopez clanked off the far post, keeping the
game even.
The Broncos returned the favor and got the
better of things in the first overtime. Cal Poly Pomona had a
golden opportunity to win the game. A corner kick by Ben Van der
Fluit was headed by Peter Hazdovac over to Armando Galvan, whose
shot in traffic sailed just wide.
Cal State Dominguez Hills had four corner kicks
in the second overtime, but the Bronco defense and Ryan kept the
game scoreless.
The Toros now take a few days off before
starting a two-match homestand next weekend. CSUDH entertains Cal
State Bakersfield on Friday, with Cal State L.A. providing the
opposition on Sunday.
