POMONA Cal Poly Pomonas
womens soccer team fell behind in the first 20 minutes of
action and lost to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, Sunday
afternoon at Kellogg Field.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-7-1, 7-4-1)
avenged a 2-1 loss to the Broncos in Carson in the CCAA opener for
both teams and solidified its hold on second place in the CCAA
South Division. Cal Poly Pomona (7-6-2, 5-5-2), meanwhile, lost
its second straight game this weekend and fell for the fourth time
in its last five games.
The Toros now have 22 points, while the Broncos
remain in a tie for third with Cal State L.A. with 17 points. Cal
State Dominguez Hills currently holds the fourth and final
position for the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament with four
matches remaining.
The Toros got the games only goal just
19:50 into the match. Corrie Hirokawa notched her fifth goal of
the season with an assist from Rachele McDonald. The play
developed with McDonald making a run and chipping a pass to
McDonald, who was able to shoot over Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper
Amanda Cunningham and knock the ball inside the far post.
That was the only goal in what was an
evenly-contested match the rest of the way. Cunningham made seven
saves for the Broncos, while Ashley DeAlejandro made three saves
to record her fifth shutout of the season.
The Toros had a 15-9 advantage in shots.
Hirokawa, McDonald and Kristen Boskovich had four shots each for
Cal State Dominguez Hills, while Mary Carroll, Pamela Leyva, Cody
McClure and Bethany Meichsner had two shots each for the Broncos.
The Toros now take a few days off before
starting a two-match homestand next weekend. CSUDH entertains Cal
State Bakersfield on Friday, with Cal State L.A. providing the
opposition on Sunday.
