Carson, CA -- Riding momentum from its 2-0-1
record last week, the Cal State Dominguez Hills mens soccer
team moved up from No. 23 to No. 22 in this weeks
NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, it was announced this morning by the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
The Toros, sporting an 10-5-1, 6-5-1 CCAA
record, picked up a 1-0 decision over UC San Diego last Wednesday,
before taking a 3-2 overtime win at Cal State San Bernardino two
days later as freshman Mario Guerrero (Riverside, CA/La Sierra
HS) notched two goals in the game, including the game-winner
in overtime, and senior Jesse Graham (San Diego, CA/Pt. Loma
HS) scored two goals on the week and delivered the assist on
Guerreros golden goal. Between the posts, keeper Kyle
Polak (Huntington Beach, CA/CS Fullerton) picked up two
shutouts in improving his league-leading season shutout total to
eight.
Entering Fridays contest versus Cal State
Bakersfield, CSUDH finds itself with the 5th-most points in a
conference that includes just four teams in its year-end
tournament, slated for October 26-29. Looking ahead to the NCAA
postseason, the Toros hold a steady grip on the 3rd and final
slot, trailing the top two seeds in Seattle Pacific and Seattle
University.
The Toros were the only CCAA squad to be
ranked, while defending CCAA Champion Sonoma State received
national votes with its 11-5 mark, but sit behind the Toros in the
Far West Region.
Franklin Pierce (NH) took over the nations
top spot after Lynn (FL) lost its first game of the year and
dropped to No. 9. Dowling (NY), Carson-Newman (TN), defending NCAA
Champion Fort Lewis (CO) and South Carolina-Upstate make up the
final teams in the top 5.
CSUDH entertains the Roadrunners on Friday at
7:00 p.m., before its final regular season home match two days
later against Cal State L.A., with first kick scheduled for 3:00
p.m. Against their cross-town rivals, the Toros will honor their
five mens and four womens seniors playing their final
game in Cardinal & Gold in pre-game ceremonies.
