Toros Jump to 22nd in Latest NSCAA/adidas Men's Soccer Poll
CSUDH completes regular season home stand this weekend against southern California rivals Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State L.A.
October 10, 2006

Carson, CA -- Riding momentum from its 2-0-1 record last week, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team moved up from No. 23 to No. 22 in this week’s NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, it was announced this morning by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

The Toros, sporting an 10-5-1, 6-5-1 CCAA record, picked up a 1-0 decision over UC San Diego last Wednesday, before taking a 3-2 overtime win at Cal State San Bernardino two days later as freshman Mario Guerrero (Riverside, CA/La Sierra HS) notched two goals in the game, including the game-winner in overtime, and senior Jesse Graham (San Diego, CA/Pt. Loma HS) scored two goals on the week and delivered the assist on Guerrero’s golden goal. Between the posts, keeper Kyle Polak (Huntington Beach, CA/CS Fullerton) picked up two shutouts in improving his league-leading season shutout total to eight.

Entering Friday’s contest versus Cal State Bakersfield, CSUDH finds itself with the 5th-most points in a conference that includes just four teams in its year-end tournament, slated for October 26-29. Looking ahead to the NCAA postseason, the Toros hold a steady grip on the 3rd and final slot, trailing the top two seeds in Seattle Pacific and Seattle University.

The Toros were the only CCAA squad to be ranked, while defending CCAA Champion Sonoma State received national votes with its 11-5 mark, but sit behind the Toros in the Far West Region.

Franklin Pierce (NH) took over the nation’s top spot after Lynn (FL) lost its first game of the year and dropped to No. 9. Dowling (NY), Carson-Newman (TN), defending NCAA Champion Fort Lewis (CO) and South Carolina-Upstate make up the final teams in the top 5.

CSUDH entertains the Roadrunners on Friday at 7:00 p.m., before its final regular season home match two days later against Cal State L.A., with first kick scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Against their cross-town rivals, the Toros will honor their five men’s and four women’s seniors playing their final game in Cardinal & Gold in pre-game ceremonies.
