San Francisco, Calif...--- Cal State Dominguez
Hills Toros Monique Castro scored the game-winning goal with
a little under four minutes left in the first overtime period to
give the visiting Toros a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco State
University Gators (4-11-4, 3-9-4 CCAA) in both teams' regular
season finale at SF States Cox Stadium.
It was a case of too little, too late, however.
CSUDH, because of Humboldt State's win at Cal State Stanislaus
earlier this afternoon, lost the fourth and final spot in the
upcoming CCAA Tournament to the 'Jacks, and ends their 2006 season
at 11-8-1, 10-5-1 CCAA.
Amy Livergood scored the first goal of the
match for the Toros off a corner kick by Jackie Chavez at the
39:30 mark of the first half. The match remained 1-0 Cal State
Dominguez Hills until the 66:45 mark, when Melinas Triantos tied
the match at 1-1 off a free kick from Meza.
The match remained tied for the final 23
minutes of the regulation to send the game into overtime. Six
minutes into the first overtime, Castro connected on her first
goal to send the Toros home with a 2-1 victory.
Sarah Balderas recorded seven saves in goal
while the Toros Ashley DeAlejandro had two in goal for Cal
State Dominguez Hills.
The Toros graduated three seniors in Candace
Hearn, Rachele McDonald and Natalie Taracena. McDonald established
herself as one of the greatest players to ever don a Cardinal &
Gold uniform, having earned her place amongst CSUDH's top 10 lists
for goals, assists and points in a Toro career in her three years
in Carson. Honors McDonald has earned include two 1st-team
All-Region, two 1st-team All-CCAA and the 2004 CCAA Player of the
Year with this year's awards still to come.
