Las Vegas, NV - One day after giving 2nd-ranked
University of Montevallo all it wanted in the tune of a
three-point Toro loss, CSUDH experienced a defensive lull of sorts
as host and 4th-ranked Seattle Pacific shot a sizzling 62.7% from
the field, including 56.5% from 3-point land, in taking an 84-65
decision on the second and final day of the SPU Las Vegas
Thanksgiving Classic. With the loss, CSUDH drops to 0-2 to begin
the 2006-07 basketball season.
The Toros kept things close in the opening
minutes, tying the Falcons 5-5 at the 16:53 mark. That's as close
as CSUDH would get, however, as SPU would outscore the Toros 26-7
over the next 10 minutes to seize control of the contest in taking
a 31-12 lead. CSUDH would use two Jonathan Toliver (Inglewood,
CA/Westchester HS) 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 13 with
just over 6 minutes left in the opening period and would get as
close as 36-31 on a Carlos Rivers (Long Beach, CA/LA Valley
College) long range bomb with 47 ticks left on the clock, but
SPU's Dustin Bremerman would connect on his own trey to give the
Falcons a comfortable 39-31 lead entering the half.
After intermission, Bremerman put the Falcons
up by 11 with another 3-pointer to open the second-half scoring,
and another bucket from behind the arc by SPU's Drew Matsen would
give the Falcons a 16 point lead at the 16:29 mark. CSUDH would
shave 3 points off the lead on a Rivers 3-point basket, but the
Falcons would hit their offensive stride in the second half,
connecting for 70.8% of their shots in the second 20-minute
session.
SPU's Dustin Bremerman gave the Falcons their
then-largest lead at 23 on a 3-point heave, 3 of his game-high 23
points, before a Rob Deiderichs' lay in four minutes later put the
advantage to 24 at 81-57, all but sealing the Toros' fate. The
lead remained at least 20 points over the game's final minutes,
until a Shamont Brown (Jamaica, NY/Riverside CC) layup
with 45 seconds left in the game accounted for the contest's final
tally.
Jamaal Barnes (Compton, CA/Compton JC)
led the Toros with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field,
while Toliver and Rivers accounted for 11 points apiece in the
loss. Senior Gabe Bernard (North Hills, CA/University of Texas
at San Antonio) tallied team-high rebounding honors with 8,
while Toliver garned the most assists on the team with 5. In
addition to Bremerman's high-point total, Matzen tallied 21 of his
own in the SPU blowout win, while JoJay Jackson notched a
game-high 10 boards.
The Toros welcome Cal State Stanislaus on
Friday, December 1, for their home and CCAA opener, before hosting
Chico State the following night. First tip for both games is
scheduled for 7:30 pm in the Torodome.
