Carson, CA - Cal State Dominguez Hills turned a
two-point half-time advantage over Cal State Stanislaus into a
74-64 win in its 2006-07 season opener led by junior transfer
Brigayle Igleharts (San Diego, CA/Grossmont College) 27
points in her Toro debut. With the win the Toros start the season
1-0, 1-0 CCAA and have won three straight dating back to last
season, while the Warriors fall to 0-2, 0-2 CCAA.
With no non-conference tune-up games before the
conference opener the Toros came out with a little bit of rust
showing in the early parts of the first half.
CSUDH would grab a quick 4-2 lead on a layup by
Iglehart only to watch the Warriors tie the game on their next
possession before building a four-point lead at 9-5 with 12:36 on
the clock.
The two teams would tie six times over the next
five minutes, and be knotted at 20-20 with just over seven minutes
remaining in the half.
A pair of free throws by Brandi Bullman would
put CSUS up by five at 27-22 with just over five minutes left in
the first half, but CSUDH would not let its deficit extend any
deeper.
CSUDH would chip away at the lead and tie the
game at 29-29 on a jumper by Aujaneé Baldwin (Fontana,
CA/Palmdale HS), and Iglehart would put the Toros up by two at
33-31 before the end of the half.
After the intermission the rust was nowhere to
be found as CSUDH scored 12 straight points, capped by a long
range bomb by Jessica Liang (Alhambra, CA/Mark Keppel HS)
over the first five minutes of play, extending its lead to 48-33
on a baseline jump shot by Ashley Johnson (Los Angeles
CA/Lynwood HS).
With a 16-point lead and under 6:30 to play the
Toros would keep up the defensive intensity, using a monster block
by the lone senior on the roster, Ree Brown (Torrance,
CA/South Torrance HS).
The Warriors would chip away and cut the Toro
lead to five with 1:11 left, but free throws by Iglehart and Alana
Bailey (Altadena, CA/John Muir HS) would keep the Warriors at
bay, as CSUDH came away with the 76-64 win.
The Warriors were led by Lysandra Williams
16 points, while Gwendolyn Page chipped in a double-double with 13
points and a game high 12 rebound. Shristy Kumar added 10 points
in the effort.
In addition to Igleharts game-high 27
points, Bailey, Baldwin, and Browne all chipped in eight points in
the win. As a team CSUDH would cause 33 Warrior turnovers leading
to 34 points, and out-shoot CSUS from the floor, 41.2% to 38.2%.
CSUDH will be in action tomorrow when they host
the defending CCAA champion Chico State Wildcats, with first tip
scheduled for 5:30 pm in the Torodome. |
