CA/Compton JC) 360-degree breakaway dunk 5:43 into the second
half capped a stellar offensive performance in which Shamont
Brown (Jamaica, NY/Riverside CC) nailed 9 of his 11 shots from
the field to lead the Toros to an easy 83-51 rout over visiting
University of Hawaii at Hilo on Thursday night in the
Torodome.
The Toros (2-3) welcomed the Vulcans (2-7), who
had won all previous four meetings in the two teams history,
by scoring 22 of the games first 26 points in the first 10
minutes of play, eventually pushing its lead to 29-8 three minutes
later on a Brown jumper, two of his 12 first half points. UHH cut
the lead to 30-13 on a Justin Dobson 3-pointer, only to see the
Toros regain their 21-point lead on another Brown bucket, and to
23 on two Jonathan Toliver (Inglewood, CA/Westchester HS) foul
shots before a Michael Martin trey cut CSUDHs lead to 36-16
entering the half.
CSUDH kept the heat on after intermission,
keeping its lead at the 20-point mark, which included Barnes
electrifying dunk at the 14:17 mark. The Toros used an 11-0 run at
the 13:36 mark to push a 21-point lead to 62-30 on a lay-up by
freshman Demetrius Love (Long Beach, CA/LB Jordan HS),
after which Brown gave the Toros their biggest lead of the night
at 67-34, closing the door on the Vulcans.
The Toros cleared their bench with 8 minutes
left in regulation as all Toros played at least nine minutes.
Brown led the CSUDH scoring with 18 points. Carlos Rivers
(Long Beach, CA/LA Valley College) contributed 9 points, while
Barnes, James Cawthorne (Orange, CA/Villa Park HS) and
Vernon Ramey, Jr. (Santa Maria, CA/Hancock College) each
tallied 8 points in the win. Barnes and Brown shared team-high
honors with 6 boards apiece as not even CSUDHs 11-for-17
performance at the foul line (64.7%) would jeopardize tonights
contest.
For the Vulcans, Rashad Bilals 13 and
Samuel Wilhoites 11 points paced UHH as the visitors shot
just 30% from the field for the game, including a dismal 20.8%
(5-for-24) in the first half.

December 16, as The Masters College pays Carson a visit,
with first tip scheduled for 7:30 pm in the Torodome.
