LOS ANGELES Shayna Stanley led the Cal
State L.A. womens basketball team with 14 points as the
Golden Eagles fell to cross-town rival Cal State Dominguez Hills
on Saturday night in the Eagles Nest, 66-50.
The win improves the women's record to 7-4, 4-3
CCAA, and with the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 3-9 overall,
1-6 in the CCAA.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early as the
Toros started the contest with a nine-point run. Cal State L.A.
was never able to recover and went into halftime down, 42-19.
At one point in the second half, the Golden
Eagles found themselves facing a 30-point deficit. With 12:44 left
to play, Cal State L.A. began to chip away at their foes
seemingly insurmountable lead. With 30 seconds to play, the Golden
Eagles had cut the Toros lead in half. Time ran out before
Cal State L.A. had the chance to get back in the game.
In the second half of the nights
doubleheader, Cal State Dominguez Hills defeated the Golden
Eagles, 80-66. The Toros improve to 6-6, 3-4 CCAA, while CSULA
drops to 5-7, 2-5 CCAA.
Much like the first game of the evening, the
Golden Eagles found themselves down early and were unable to
recover. Cal State L.A. was able to keep it close until late in
the first half when a six-point run by the Toros gave them a 35-22
lead. The Golden Eagles would get the last three points of the
period before heading into halftime on the short end of the 35-26
score.
The Golden Eagles were unable to continue their
momentum for long in the second half. At one point, the Golden
Eagles were only five points away from tying the game, but the
Toros lead steadily increased from there. In the closing
moments of the match, Micah Hamilton nailed a dunk as the Golden
Eagles finished the game 66-80.
CSUDH put three players in double figure
scoring, led by Jonathan Toliver's 15. Mike Steed, with 14, and
Shamont Brown, with 13, were right behind.
The Golden Eagles' Jontae Vinson posted a
double-double grabbing 10 rebounds and leding all scorers with 21
points. Donte Bell, with 11, and Robert Reynaga, with 10, each
scored in double digits for the Golden Eagles.
Up next for the Toros are two area teams, Cal
Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino, visiting Carson for a
weekend homestand. The CPP Broncos arrive Friday, with the women's
game beginning at the usual 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the CSUSB Coyotes
come calling, with the women's game tipping off at the same time. |
