This Week’s Opponents:

  • Cal Poly Pomona (1/19)
  • Cal State San Bernardino (1/20)

Recapping Last Week:

Against CSUB, the Roadrunners jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead in less than seven minutes of action and never looked back in the contest.

Turnovers played a huge role in this one. Not only did the Toros turn the ball over 21 times in the game compared to just 10 assists, but they also had 12 turnovers in the first half which resulted in 10 Roadrunner points. Combine that with Dominguez’s 2-of-6 shooting from the free-throw line in the first half, and it comes as little surprise that Bakersfield led at the half by 11 at 34-23.

The Roadrunners turned it on in the second half and extended their 11-point halftime lead to 16 by the midway point, and were up by 20 with 7:40 remaining in the game when a Jessi Loring jumper gave Bakersfield a 58-38 lead.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had a balanced scoring night with their constant substitution method as Ennisha Kyles led the way with 12 points while Brittney Blankenship added 10.

The following night the Toros got back to their winning ways by starting the game with a 9-0 run that eventually turned into a 42-19 halftime lead over host Cal State L.A.

After the intermission, the Toros would keep the pressure on and expand their lead 30 points at one point. With 12:44 left to play, Cal State L.A. began to chip away at the Toros seemingly insurmountable lead, getting it down to 15 points, but time would expire before Cal State L.A. had the chance to get back in the game.

The Toros had two players in double figures led by junior Jessica Liang’s 21 points, including six three-point makes, and Alana Bailey’s 10 points and eight rebounds.

News & Notes:

A bright future: Post player Ennisha Kyles is beginning to showcase the talent that garnered her “the most athletic post we have” quote by head coach Van Girard heading into the season, and is quietly displaying an impressive array of skills that should produce a bright future.

In a blowout loss to nationally-ranked Azusa Pacific earlier this season, the 5-10 sophomore scored 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds, with six of them coming off the offensive end

One month later against Sonoma State she ripped down a career-high 11 boards in 22 minutes on the floor.

Last weekend against Cal State Bakersfield the USC Mast HS alumnus had her second double-digit scoring effort of the season with 12 points and four boards. The following night against Cal State L.A. the Los Angeles native scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds, while only playing 19 minutes in each game.

Getting adjusted: It has been a rough transition for junior Michele Hale, who after being one of the main members of the Cal State Monterey Bay women’s basketball team for two seasons, has yet to really find her place on the Toro roster.

As an Otter, Hale averaged 9.6 points and 6.0 rebounds, and in her two games against the Toros in 2004-05, she averaged 10.5 points and 9.5 boards.

After sitting out last season as a conference transfer, Hale has not had the smoothest transition, averaging only a little over seven minutes a game.

However, in the rare times in which the Los Angeles native has seen extended action, she has produced.

In only nine minutes against Cal State L.A. last Saturday, Hale scored six points (3-for-3), and against Minnesota-Crookston (12/29) she scored four points and pulled down six boards in 18 minutes.

Hale also has two other four-rebound two-point performances in games which she saw less than eight minutes.

Home cooking: After spending the last month on the road the Toros are finally able to come back home to the friendly confines of the Torodome.

Home cooking has helped the Toros a 4-1 overall home record, compared to just 2-3 on the road.

In the Torodome CSUDH is averaging 68.4 points per game compared to 59.6 on the road, while its defense is holding opponents to 56.8 points at home compared to giving up 65.6 points on the road.

Besides-sharp shooter Jessica Liang (11.0 ppg at home/11.6 ppg on the road) and Alana Bailey (9.6 ppg at home/9.0 ppg on the road), many of the top Toro scorers are averaging at least four points less per game on the road.

About This Week’s Foes:
  • Cal Poly Pomona Broncos 4-8, 3-4 CCAA
About the Broncos: After extending their losing streak to five games with an 88-64 loss to Chico State on Friday, the Broncos picked up their first win in a month over Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, 88-67.

The Wildcats scored the first 10 points of the game and never trailed. The Broncos managed to cut the deficit to five points, 12-7, with 13:10 remaining in the half, but the Wildcats scored the next 14 points to take a 26-7 lead with 7:58 left in the half, before closing out the half on a 9-0 to lead into the break 44-17

Chico State built its largest lead of 35 points in the second half and the Broncos were unable to draw closer than the 24-point final margin.

Porsche Kirksey led the Broncos with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Ashley Moody and Vanessa Dominguez chipped in nine points apiece.

The next night the Broncos exploded for a 50-point first half, while shooting over 50% from the field to grab a 17 point lead heading into intermission.

The Bronco defense would force 28 Warrior turnovers while Rachel Gatdula’s three three-point shots would be the highlight of eight total long-range bombs by CPP.

Ashley Moody scored a season-high 18 points to lead the Broncos, while Dominguez added 17 points and eight rebounds and Ally Smith had a season-high 13 points.

  • CS San Bernardino Coyotes 8-4, 7-3 CCAA
About the Coyotes: The Coyotes are coming off a split last weekend, first beating Cal State Stanislaus 75-57 and then losing to Chico State 68-49, snapping their four-game win streak.

Prior to last weekend, CSUSB picked up a pair of road victories over Cal State Monterey Bay (65-54) and San Francisco State (69-62).

Against the Warriors (1/12) Vanessa Wilt scored a season-high 27 points and collected 22 rebounds.

The Coyotes shot 48 percent in the first half as they motored to a 44-32 halftime lead and finished off the cold-shooting Warriors with a 16-4 run to start the second half for a 60-36 lead with 13:08 remaining in the game.

CSUSB shot 43 percent for the game and outrebounded the Warriors 50-37. CSUSB was cold from long range, hitting just four of 17 from three-point range. However, the team continues to show improvement from the foul line, making 15 of 18 (83 percent).

The next night against Chico State, CSUSB would be out matched .

The Coyotes would commit 24 turnovers and shoot 16.7% (2-for-12) at the free throw line while allowing the Wildcats to nearly 44% from the field.

Wilt would again lead the offense with 11 points and six boards while Jaclyn Rainville chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.
