Recapping Last Week
After being evenly matched over the first 10
minutes last Saturday against the Coyotes, the Toros would grab
the first real advantage in the game with a four-point lead at
15-11, thanks to a trey by Michelle Kribell at the 9:17 mark.
After back-to-back three-point shots by CSUSB
to tie at 19-19, the Toros would rebuild their four-point lead on
consecutive jumpers by Brittney Blankenship, but a CSUSB layup
followed by a deep trey would give the Coyotes a one-point
advantage heading into intermission.
The Coyotes would turn it on after the break,
extending their lead to 30-23 in the first three minutes, and then
to 38-27 at the 13:04 mark.
CSUSB would show no signs of cooling down over
the next seven minutes, stretching its lead to 21 at 53-23 with
5:40 on the clock.
Blankenship led the offense with nine points
and eight rebounds, with Brigayle Iglehart and Alana Bailey each
chipping in eight points in the effort.
Against the Broncos the night before, Jessica
Liang came out locked and loaded, nailing a long-range bomb to
kick off an 8-2 Toro run over the first two and a half minutes of
play.
The Broncos would respond with three straight
buckets by Jessica Hopkins to knot the game at 8-8 with 15:15
showing on the clock.
The two teams would remain close over the next
three minutes before an offensive rebound and put back by Michele
Hale would ignite an 8-0 Toro run, putting CSUDH up 24-15 with
10:30 left.
The Coyotes would cut the Toro lead to just
two, were it would fluctuate over the next seven minutes before a
jumper by Mallory Avila at the 2:13 mark put CSUDH back up nine at
40-31.
CPP would disintegrate the Toro lead after the
break, finding themselves down only one at the 16.59 mark.
After a Toro time out, Blankenship would drive
to the basket to stop the Bronco momentum, and eventually the
Toros would extend their lead to 11 on a Blankenship trey with
8:23 remaining in the contest.
The Toros lead would hover around double digits
over the next five minutes.
In addition to Igleharts 21 points,
Blankenship and Bailey were both in double figures with 16 and 11
points, respectively.

A Pair of New Faces: Here is a quick
look back at what head coach Van Girard had to say about two of
the new players on the team in the pre-season:
Brigayle (Iglehart) has a
tremendous ability to get to the basket and a nice mid-range game.
She will be a different kind of point than we have had in that she
will pitch the ball.
Unique (Bennett) is a physical
guard and a very good deep shooter who should also be able to help
us on the boards.

About This Weeks Foes
About the Otters
CS Monterey Bay Otters -- 3-11, 2-7 CCAA:
The Otters are currently on a four-game losing streak, and
have lost 10 of their last 11 games.
Last week CSUMB fell in a 63-56 overtime
decision to Cal State Stanislaus, and then to nationally-ranked
Chico State, 67-54.
Against the Warriors, CSUMB would outshoot CSUS
in the first half, 33.3- to 30.6-, but find themselves down two at
intermission, 29-27.
The Otters field goal percentage would
slip to 32.5- in the second half while the Warriors increased to
47.6, however, CSUMB would use an 11-2 offensive rebounding
advantage to win the second half 29-27, knotting the game at 56-56
and forcing an extra period.
The extra period would not be kind to the
Otters as they went 0-5 from the field, putting a goose egg on the
scoreboard.
The next night the Otters would fight hard
against the first place Wildcats of Chico State.
CSUMB would limit the high powered Wildcat
offense to only 32 first half points and a 33.3 field goal
percentage while scoring 26 points and also shooting 33.3- from
the floor.
CSUMB would fade a little in the second half,
allowing CSUC to shoot 42.4- from the field, and seeing its
shooting percentage dip to 31.0- in the 13-point loss.
About the Gators
San Francisco State Gators -- 4-10, 4-5 CCAA
SFSU is coming off a split last weekend, falling to Chico State
80-50, and then ending their four-game losing streak with a 72-64
win over Cal State Stanislaus.
Against CSUC the game would be out of reach
quickly with the Wildcats shooting 53.3- in the first half and
building 40-25 lead.
Offensively Krystle Mays would carry the first
half load for the Gators with 10 points.
The Gator defense would step in in the second
half and bring the Wildcat shooting percentage down to 37.1-, but
CSUC would still score 40 points in the period, thanks in part to
13 made free throws and 12 offensive rebounds.
The next night the Gators would start off slow,
finding themselves down 33-27 at intermission before exploding for
45 points while shooting 51.4- from the floor in the second half
to pick up the win over the Warriors.
In the first half SFSU would outshoot CSUS
39.3- to 33.3-, but the Warriors would use a 15-to-6 offensive
rebounding advantage to make up for the lack of shooting accuracy
to build its lead.
After intermission everything would seem to
shift the Gators way.
SFSUs Brio Rode would hit an offensive
groove and score 14 points, after just four in the first half, to
lead her team to the come-from-behind win.
