Turlock, CA The Toros began the 2007
season by splitting their two games on day one of the Best
of the West Tournament, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.
CSUDH took a 2-1 squeaker over Grand Canyon to begin the morning
before falling 9-0 in five innings to preseason No. 4 Humboldt
State in their nightcap.
In game one, Jennifer Martinez (La Habra,
CA/Cal State Long Beach) tossed a 3-hitter in her Toro debut
as CSUDH took a 2-1 win over Grand Canyon to open the 2007 season.
Although the Toros managed just one hit in the win, a booming
double to right center by Mayra Oliden (Los Angeles,
CA/Cerritos College), the patient Toro hitters earned five
walks, led by eagle eyed Katie Jordan (Huntington Beach,
CA/Marina HS), who reached base via base on ball three times.
After the Lopes pushed their run across
to open the scoring in the 2nd, CSUDH scored both its runs one
inning later, courtesy of a costly GCU error at home plate and a
J. Martinez RBI groundout for the game winner. In the decisive
frame, CSUDH reached base twice on walks.
Martinez hurled a complete game in her debut,
walking three and fanning one as she improved to 1-0 on the year.
Against the Lumberjacks, whom the Toros knocked
from last years NCAA Far West Regional, it was a much
different story as 4th-ranked HSU used a six-run second inning to
rout the Toros. The 'Jacks biggest bat came from Natalie Galletly
who drove in five runs, two courtesy of a two-run bomb in the
offensive second inning.
The Toros continue the Cal State
Stanislaus-hosted Best of the West Tournament tomorrow
as they battle Notre Dame de Namur at 10:45, followed by a
pre-CCAA conference match-up with Cal State Monterey Bay at 1:00
pm. |
